Backpacking in Coogee Beach
👌 Worth visitingbeach ranked #17
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Coogee has a tidal ocean pool carved into the rocks at each end, and the Wylie’s Baths one is a century-old, trust-run affair that charges only a few dollars. Coogee Beach sits in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Australia, a short ride from the city center. The sand is clean, the surf mellow, the pubs loud. Budget beds are scarce. Seagulls shrieked over my chips on the promenade, and that sound is Coogee to me. Skip the shopping strip, swim, then walk the coast path north. Arrive by lunch, swim, and let sunset do the rest.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #17 beach in Australia
Reasons people choose to visit here

Backpackers stop here because Coogee is the beach that feels like a neighborhood rather than a postcard. Share houses and hostels fill the streets behind the sand, so you meet people who live here as well as people passing through, and the Coogee to Bondi coastal walk starts right at your feet. It works as a base for long stays on a tight budget, with cheap pub meals and a supermarket close to the sand. The Giles Baths and Wylie’s Baths rock pools give you calmer water when the main beach turns rough, and sunrise swimmers keep the place alive before work.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Coogee Beach itself: a curved bay of golden sand with a patrolled swim zone and a shark net, ideal for bodysurfing small waves and people-watching from the grassy slope behind.
  2. Wylie’s Baths: a 1907 ocean pool built into the southern rocks, with a small entry fee, a cafe, and swimming laps with waves crashing over the edge.
  3. Giles Baths: a free, natural rock pool at the north end, calm at low tide and good for a quiet dip away from the main crowd.
  4. Coogee to Bondi coastal walk: roughly 6 kilometers of cliff paths past Gordons Bay, Clovelly, Bronte and Tamarama, with sea views and snorkeling stops along the way.
  5. Gordons Bay Underwater Nature Trail: a short walk north leads to a marked snorkel route in a sheltered inlet, where you can spot blue gropers and rays in clear water.

🛏️ Where to stay?Where staying makes the most sense

Coogee itself is the best bet, particularly the streets around Coogee Bay Road and Arcadia Street, a two-minute walk to the sand. You get cafes, pubs, a supermarket and the 373 bus to the city, plus the coastal walk to Bondi on your doorstep. Hostels and shared houses here tend to attract working-holiday travelers, so meeting people is easy. Evenings are relaxed rather than rowdy. Clovelly, a 20-minute walk north, is quieter and a little cheaper, with a sheltered inlet for swimming. Randwick, uphill toward the university, has the cheapest rooms and better transit, but you lose the beach feel. Dorm prices climb in summer.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Coogee Beach

Coogee is patrolled and well managed, and swimming between the red and yellow flags in front of the surf club is the norm from September to April. Rips form near the rocks at the north and south ends, and the swell can build fast after southerly changes. Locals favor the sheltered Giles Baths and McIver’s Ladies Baths when the surf is heavy. The UV is strong, so cover up by mid-morning. Petty theft is rare but phones left on the sand do disappear, so use the lockers near the promenade.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Take bus 373 from Circular Quay or bus 372 from Central, both about 35 to 50 minutes depending on traffic. There is no train to Coogee, so the light rail to Randwick or Kingsford followed by a short bus is another option. A taxi or rideshare from the CBD costs roughly A$30 to 45 and takes 20 to 30 minutes.
Swimming is the main draw, with patrolled water and calm rock pools such as Wylie’s Baths and Giles Baths. Surfing is possible but the beach break is small and often crowded, so most surfers head to Maroubra, a short ride south. Snorkeling is good at Gordons Bay, a 15 minute walk north along the coastal path, where a marked underwater nature trail follows the reef.
Yes, the beach, promenade and the coastal walk to Bondi cost nothing. Showers and toilets are free, and lockers are a few dollars. Wylie’s Baths charges about A$5 to 7 entry, while Giles Baths and McIver’s Ladies Baths (women and children only) are free or cost a small fee. Street parking nearby is metered, around A$3 to 6 an hour.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Give Coogee two or three days if you want to swim, snorkel and walk the coast without rushing. A single day only gets you a dip and a pub meal. I would stay longer and use the beach as a base for Sydney.

✈️ When did I visit Australia?
On my trip to New Zealand in 1993, I had a short stop in Australia as well.
