Shelly Beach sits inside Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve, so fishing is banned and the fish behave like they know it. It’s a small, sheltered cove in Sydney, Australia, just around the headland from Manly on the northern beaches. The sand is a short strip, the water is calm, and the crowds arrive with snorkels, not surfboards. Weekends get packed, parking is a sport. I still hear the cockatoos screeching over the picnic lawn while someone unwrapped a sausage roll. Your first day could be a coastal walk from Manly, a long snorkel, and lunch on the grass.

Walk in from the sand with a mask and you can meet wrasse, blue gropers and drifting schools of fish over the rocks. The other draw is the walk from Manly along the Fairy Bower path, a flat, easy stroll on the foreshore that costs nothing and ends at a calm cove. It works as a slow half day after the busier Manly beach, with enough room on the grass to sprawl out and eat.

  • Summer (Dec to Feb): Water sits around 22 to 24°C (72 to 75°F) and air reaches 26 to 28°C (79 to 82°F). Daylight lasts past 7:30 pm, but weekends fill the sand and the Manly car parks.
  • Autumn (Mar to May): Air of 20 to 25°C (68 to 77°F), warm water and thinner crowds.
  • Winter (Jun to Aug): Air of 12 to 18°C (54 to 64°F), water near 17 to 19°C (63 to 66°F), sunset around 4:50 pm. Wetsuit snorkelers have the cove to themselves.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas to stay in Australia

Manly is the base to choose, since Shelly Beach is a 15 to 20 minute walk along the Corso and the Marine Parade path. Dorm beds run roughly A$40 to 65 a night, with private rooms from about A$120. The area around the Corso and Manly Wharf is flat, social and full of backpacker cafes, surf schools and cheap bakeries, and the ferry from Circular Quay takes about 30 minutes, so you can reach the city easily. Staying near Queenscliff, at the north end of Manly Beach, is quieter and cheaper, though it adds a longer walk. Nothing sits right on Shelly Beach itself.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Shelly Beach

Shelly Beach is one of Sydney’s calmest swim spots, a small cove inside Cabbage Tree Bay Aquatic Reserve with little wave energy. Lifeguards patrol mainly in summer, so check the signs. Fish are plentiful and fishing is banned, so snorkelers find wrasse, blue gropers and the odd ray. Currents can pick up near the headland edges, so stay inside the cove. The sun is strong from October to March, and shade is limited. Leave valuables locked up, as bags left on the sand occasionally go missing.

Take the ferry from Circular Quay to Manly Wharf (about 30 minutes, roughly A$9 to 10 with an Opal card), then walk 15 to 20 minutes along the Corso and the Marine Parade path to the cove. Buses from Wynyard to Manly take about 45 to 60 minutes. Driving is possible, but the small car park beside the beach fills up early on weekends.
Swimming and snorkeling are excellent here, because the cove is sheltered and sits in a marine reserve where fishing is banned. Expect good visibility on calm days, with schools of fish and the occasional ray. Surfing is poor because the cove has hardly any swell, so surfers head to Manly Beach, about 1 km away. Rent snorkel gear in Manly for around A$20 to 30.
Yes, access and the beach itself cost nothing, and the walking path from Manly is free as well. You will only pay for extras like snorkel hire (about A$20 to 30), the Boathouse cafe, or parking, which is limited and metered. The ferry to Manly is the main transport cost, at roughly A$9 to 10 one way.
