Backpacking in Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary
👍 Recommendedattraction ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

The free-flight lorikeet feeding is included in the entry price, so you get a wild-bird spectacle without paying extra. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary sits on the southern Gold Coast in Queensland, Australia, just inland from Currumbin Beach. I once tried to hold a cup of nectar like a cool local and ended up wearing a dozen lorikeets, which taught me to stand still and hold the cup low. The koalas, kangaroos and the Wild Skies show are worth your time. The rides and the pricey add-on encounters are optional. It is crowded on school holidays, but easy to reach and nicely shaded. Unlike nearby Sea World, it is calmer, greener and entirely about Australian animals.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #11 attraction in Australia
Reasons people choose to visit here

Currumbin is the quickest way to meet koalas, kangaroos and wombats in one afternoon, without a long drive into the bush. If you land in Australia and want the classic animals ticked off, this is the efficient answer, and the animals are cared for by a working wildlife hospital on site that treats thousands of injured native creatures each year. That context makes the visit feel purposeful rather than touristy.

It also suits a rest day on the Gold Coast route. After days of hostel dorms and surf towns, a shaded walk among eucalypts is a gentle change, and the Rainbow Lorikeet feeding is the sort of noisy, ridiculous spectacle that makes strangers laugh together. Go for the animals, not the souvenirs.

💡 HighlightsDon't-miss highlights and experiences

  1. Lorikeet Feeding: Hundreds of wild rainbow lorikeets swoop in twice a day for a nectar feed, and the place is loud, colorful and chaotic. Climb onto the platform and hold the cup steady.
  2. Koala Gardens: Koalas doze in eucalypt branches at eye level, and keepers explain their diet and habits.
  3. Kangaroo and Wallaby Walkthrough: You can stroll among roos on open grass and see how relaxed they are at midday.
  4. Wild Skies Bird Show: Birds of prey and other native species fly low over the audience, and the keepers talk about each bird’s story.
  5. Currumbin Wildlife Hospital: A viewing area lets you watch vets treating injured native animals, which puts the whole sanctuary in context.

  7. Wildlife Encounters: Paid small-group sessions let you hand-feed or hold animals such as koalas or reptiles, and they are expensive, so pick one only if a particular animal matters to you.
  8. Tree Top Challenge: High ropes and zip lines run through the canopy for those wanting adrenaline between animal visits.
The lorikeet feeding and the Wild Skies show pair neatly into a single morning before the afternoon crowds arrive.

Currumbin Beach and Palm Beach are the closest bases, both a few minutes from the sanctuary by bus or rideshare. Palm Beach has a relaxed surf-town feel, with cafes along the Gold Coast Highway and a few budget rooms and guesthouses within walking distance of the sand. Currumbin Beach is quieter and better for self-catering stays.

Surfers Paradise, roughly 30 minutes north by tram and bus, has the largest concentration of backpacker hostels, plenty of nightlife, and the best transport connections, though it is loud and busy at weekends. Coolangatta, 15 minutes south, is a calmer alternative with surf beaches, cheap eats, and the airport nearby. All of these areas are safe by day, but stick to well-lit streets late at night.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plan on 4 to 6 hours for Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The park opens at 9:00 am and has a timetable of keeper talks, the Lorikeet Feeding at around 8:00 am and 4:00 pm, and wildlife shows through the day. Arriving at opening and staying until mid-afternoon covers the koalas, kangaroos and the Wild Skies bird show without rushing.
For most backpackers it is worth the entrance fee of about A$62 to 65 if you want close contact with Australian animals. Koalas, kangaroos, wombats, dingoes and a wildlife hospital are all in one place, and keeper talks and shows are included. The main extra cost is photo encounters, so skip those if you are watching your budget.
The easiest route is the Gold Coast light rail to Burleigh Heads, then a bus along the Gold Coast Highway towards Coolangatta, which takes about 45 to 60 minutes from Surfers Paradise. The stop is on Tomewin Street, a short walk from the entrance. Rideshare from Burleigh Heads takes roughly 15 minutes, and Gold Coast Airport at Coolangatta is about 10 minutes away by car.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Arrive when the gates open and head straight for the koalas, who are awake and eating before the midday heat sends them to sleep. Stay for the afternoon lorikeet feeding if you can, but skip the add-on encounters unless one animal is your dream.
