Backpacking in Little Beach
👀 For curious travelersbeach ranked #28
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | last update: 19 April, 2026

Little Beach looks like a screensaver, but the surprising bit is how quickly it can feel almost too small once a few Instagram crews show up with tripods and floaties. It’s in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve near Albany, Western Australia. For backpackers, it’s a high-effort, high-reward detour: blindingly clean sand, turquoise water that’s swimmable but can dump you hard, zero surf culture, and barely any budget food or beds nearby. Compared with nearby Misery Beach or Greens Pool, Little Beach is more dramatic and photogenic but less practical; I’ve loved it for a long lunch-and-swim day, then been very glad I was sleeping and eating back in Albany.

Why Little Beach should be on your travel list

Little Beach in Australia is a backpacker haven for good reason. The laid-back atmosphere invites you to kick off your shoes and forget about the world. It’s affordable, making it a perfect pit stop for those on a budget. The social scene buzzes with fellow travelers swapping stories over a cold drink, while the water access is a refreshing escape from the grind of the trail. More than just a place to swim, it serves as a connector along the coastal route, allowing you to recharge before diving back into your adventure. Who knew a beach could feel like a cozy living room?

  • Pure white quartz sand and turquoise water — Little Beach is famous for unbelievably fine, bright-white sand that contrasts with clear, blue-green water; the steep dune-backed bay creates those postcard colors and feels more like a secluded cove than a typical coast.
  • Snorkeling among granite outcrops and kelp — The headlands and rock shelves alongside the beach shelter patches of kelp and rocky reef where small fish, crabs and nudibranchs congregate; the water clarity makes short, shallow snorkels very rewarding without needing a boat.
  • Short coastal walks and cliff lookouts — A quick walk from the carpark gains a ridge-top lookout that gives sweeping views of the bay and neighboring granite islands; the dune climb and cliff edges are perfect for dramatic photos and quick, satisfying hikes

  • Wildlife watching and seasonal whales — The protected reserve around Little Beach is a hotspot for seabirds and several southwest Australian endemics, and during the winter migration months you can often spot whales moving along the coast from the headlands.
  • Sunset from the headland and stargazing — With low light pollution and a west-facing outlook, sunset turns the white sand and granite pink, then the dark sky over the reserve makes for excellent stargazing—an easy, peaceful night activity after the day crowds leave.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Topic: Weather – Best time is late spring to early autumn (October to April). Temperatures hover between 20-30°C (68-86°F), perfect for beach lounging without turning into a roasted shrimp.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours – Summer months offer long days, up to 14 hours of sunlight, giving you more time to soak in the sun and less time watching your watch.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak season (December to February) means more backpackers and party vibes, which can be fun or a headache depending on your tolerance for noise and sand in your tent.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – Summer brings beach parties and snorkeling; winter is quieter but cooler, with water temps dropping to 18°C (64°F), not ideal for a swim but great for peaceful hikes.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Expect higher prices and booked-out

Pro-tip: Aim for late spring or early autumn to dodge the crowds and still enjoy warm weather—your wallet and sanity will thank you.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Staying near Little Beach? Aim for the nearby town of Nelson Bay. It’s buzzing with backpacker-friendly vibes and a solid mix of budget accommodations. You’ll find plenty of hostels where the communal kitchens are alive with chatter and the occasional impromptu dinner party.

Another option is Shoal Bay, just a hop away. It’s quieter but still social, with beachside cafes perfect for post-swim snacks.

Both areas are safe, so you can wander without feeling like you’re in a horror movie. Plus, you’ll be close to the sand and surf, making it easy to chase sunsets and new friends.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Little Beach is generally a safe haven for backpackers, but a few realities keep it interesting. Currents can sneak up on you, especially during high tide, so stick to where the locals swim. They know the lay of the land—and the water.

Watch for jellyfish in warmer months; a sting can ruin your day. Sunscreen is your best friend; the sun doesn’t mess around here. Keep an eye on your gear, too. Beach vibes are great, but theft can happen when you’re distracted by that perfect wave. Enjoy the surf, but stay aware.

I 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Little Beach

Little Beach is a slice of paradise, with soft sands and crystal-clear waters that make you feel like you’ve stumbled into a postcard. Just don’t expect a five-star resort; the lack of facilities means you’ll need to pack your own snacks and drinks. Embrace the adventure!

✈️ When did I visit Australia?
On my trip to New Zealand in 1993, I had a short stop in Australia as well.
