Tamworth is a regional city of about 65,000 people, not a country-music theme park, and the big guitar is the only thing that’s truly kitsch. It sits in New South Wales, Australia, on the Peel River. Arriving, I’d expect wide streets and quiet pubs, not a stampede of hats. Hostels are few, so evenings are low-key and meeting backpackers takes effort. Easy to reach, best as a stop between Sydney and Brisbane. Visit in January for the festival, and book ahead, because beds vanish.

Stay in or within a few blocks of the CBD around Peel Street, where most budget beds, pubs and the station are within a 15 minute walk. Dedicated hostels are scarce in Tamworth, so expect budget motels, caravan park cabins and pub rooms, with caravan parks on the highway edges offering the cheapest options but needing a bus or taxi. Central streets are quiet at night, though pub-adjacent rooms can be noisy on weekends. Book early for the January festival.

Tamworth is broadly safe and calm for travelers. Weekend nights around the pubs on Peel Street can get rowdy, so walk in pairs, keep to lit streets and use a taxi after midnight. Solo travelers rarely have problems. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight, as opportunistic theft from vehicles happens. In summer, the heat is the bigger hazard, so carry water and avoid midday walks.
