- Wilpena Pound amphitheatre — The defining natural bowl: a huge, oval valley ringed by jagged sandstone rims that you can walk into and around. It’s a one-of-a-kind landform whose shape and scale (and the way light plays on the cliffs at dawn and dusk) feel unmistakably “this place.”
- St Mary Peak (Ikara) — The highest point on the Wilpena rim and an important Adnyamathanha site. The full hike up gives dramatic, 360° views into the Pound and across the Flinders Ranges; the climb is steep but the combination of scenery and cultural meaning makes it worth the effort.

- Arkaroo Rock — Hidden gem: a concentrated Aboriginal rock-art panel and seasonal water cascade tucked into the Pound’s interior. The rock paintings and the little rock-pools that appear after rain are culturally significant and offer a quieter, deeply local experience away from the main lookouts.
- Wangara Lookout — A less-crowded rim viewpoint on the eastern side that frames the amphitheatre differently from the popular western overlooks. Fantastic at sunrise and for photographers who want clean lines and long shadows across the Pound floor.
- Pound Rim Walk (the Rim Circuit) — The classic multi-hour ridge walk that traverses the rim saddles and clifflines of the Pound. It’s the best way to appreciate how the whole amphitheatre was carved, with changing geology, microhabitats and views you won’t get by driving around the park.
- The Basin (the Pound floor) — Walkable flat country inside the amphitheatre where you can stroll among grasslands, ghost gums and seasonal wildflowers, watch birds and see how the rim encloses the landscape. It’s a peaceful contrast to the cliffline drama above and feels uniquely intimate.
- Old Wilpena Station ruins & shearing shed — Hidden gem: tangible pastoral heritage sitting at the edge of the Pound — weathered stonework and the old shearing shed tell the story of 19th-20th century station life and how Europeans worked in this harsh country. It’s a quiet, atmospheric place for history buffs and photographers.
- Adnyamathanha cultural places and storytelling walks — Joining a local cultural walk or listening to on-site Adnyamathanha stories inside the Pound connects the landscape to its traditional owners in a way you can’t replicate elsewhere. The cultural layers here (place names, creation stories, rock art) are specific to Ikara and enrich any visit.
- Seasonal creeklines and waterholes in the Pound — Hidden gem: after rain the Pound’s internal creeks and small waterholes come alive — ephemeral pools, reflections of the cliffs and sudden bursts of birdlife and frogs. Those brief wet moments transform the Pound and are a local treat most visitors miss if the trip is dry.
- Night skies and nocturnal wildlife watching — The Pound’s remoteness gives proper dark skies for stargazing and a good chance of seeing kangaroos, possums and small marsupials come dusk. Sitting under the rim with the Milky Way overhead is an experience distinct from populated parts of Australia.
