- Hochgolling summit — The highest peak in the Schladminger Tauern (2,862 m) and the obvious payoff: 360° alpine panoramas that sweep from the Dachstein massif to the lower valleys. It’s a classic summit-climb feeling — gutsy ascent, huge views, and a real sense of standing above the range rather than just walking through it.
- Prebersee and the Preber cirque — A little alpine tarn tucked beneath the Preber peak; the mirror-like water and surrounding cirque make for one of the most photogenic stops on the route. It’s a fantastic place to rest, picnic, or shoot reflections of the rocky slopes — very different from tree-lined lowland lakes.

- The high ridge (Höhenweg) panoramas — Long, exposed ridgewalking with constant views and dramatic drop-offs on either side. Compared with lower, forested hikes this trail feels open, airy and relentlessly scenic — perfect if you like uninterrupted horizon lines and peak-hopping.
- Traditional alpine huts and pasture culture — Scattered alms and shepherd huts break the wilderness up with warm food, cold beer and very local vibes. These places are great for a rest, to taste regional mountain fare, and to see summer grazing, hand-mown hay meadows and working mountain life up close.
- Alpine wildlife, flowers and glacial cirques — Look for marmots whistling from rocks, chamois on steep faces and birds of prey wheeling above. In summer the ridges and meadows explode with alpine blooms. The combination of wildlife, wildflower carpets and glacially carved bowls gives the trail a raw, high-mountain character you don’t get on busy valley walks.
