The thing nobody tells you about Neusiedler See beach until you’re already sunburnt and annoyed: the lake is so shallow and warm that you can stand forever, which makes it basically a giant, natural infinity pool where you almost can’t drown, lose your flip-flop, or your dignity. Neusiedler See sits in eastern Austria, in Burgenland near the Hungarian border, and the “beaches” are more grassy shorelines and piers than classic sand. For backpackers, it’s a chill, low-drama stop: clean facilities, easy train access to towns like Podersdorf and Rust, cheap campground options, and plenty of snack stands doing budget-friendly langos and sausages. The downside: in summer it gets busy with families and windsurfers, the water’s murky and shallow so real swimming, surfing, diving, or snorkeling is basically a joke, and the scenery is more reed beds and big sky than postcard Alps.
