Traunsee beach is the rare Alpine lake spot where the water can feel colder than the beer, yet locals still swim like it’s a heated pool. It sits in Upper Austria’s Salzkammergut region, mainly around the town of Gmunden, and it’s more lakeside “strandbad” than classic sandy beach. For backpackers, it’s a trade: you lose soft sand, you gain ridiculous mountain views and some of the cleanest, clearest water in Austria. Crowds show up on hot weekends, but it’s nothing like the chaos around Wolfgangsee or Hallstätter See.
