Backpacking in Trilha do Corcovado
👍 Recommendedhike ranked #9
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 9, 2026

You have to choose: ride the tourist train to Cristo Redentor, or grind up on your own legs via the Trilha do Corcovado and actually earn that statue. That choice matters, because the trail turns Rio de Janeiro from postcard into something you feel in your lungs and calves. The hike starts in Cosme Velho, on the south side of Rio, in Brazil’s state of Rio de Janeiro. It’s steep, humid, and rooty, with slick sections that punish bad shoes, but the Atlantic Forest, waterfalls, and sudden city viewpoints keep pulling you upward. Expect around 2–3 hours of solid climbing, tougher than most Sugarloaf-area walks and more committing than the easy viewpoints in Tijuca National Park, yet still reachable by bus or metro plus a short walk. I finished drenched, scratched, and grinning.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while hiking the Trilha do Corcovado

  1. Tijuca’s Atlantic Forest interior — Walking through a chunk of true urban rainforest is the trail’s headline: dense canopy, hanging bromeliads and ferns, sudden showers and that wet-earth smell you don’t get on most city hikes. The scale and humidity make it feel like a proper jungle squeezed into Rio — rare for a capital.
  2. Wildlife encounters — Expect curious marmosets, the distant roar of howler monkeys (bugios) and a riot of birds and butterflies. It’s one of the easier places near a big city to reliably spot native fauna, so keep your camera ready but don’t feed anything.
  3. Streams, cascades and old trailwork — Small waterfalls, clear springs and wet rock slabs break up the walk; you’ll also see old stone steps, retaining walls and traces of the historic Corcovado access routes. Those

  3. Streams, cascades and old trailwork — Small waterfalls, clear springs and wet rock slabs break up the walk; you’ll also see old stone steps, retaining walls and traces of the historic Corcovado access routes. Those bits of water + human history give the trail texture that plain dirt tracks lack.
  4. Mid-trail viewpoints — Several smaller outlooks before the summit offer different angles of Rio: Sugarloaf, the bay, and the mosaic of neighborhoods. They’re great for catching changing light, quick rest stops and photos without the crowds at the top.
  5. The summit beneath Christ the Redeemer — The payoff: standing under the statue with a sweeping 360° of Rio, Sugarloaf, the beaches and the mountains. It’s as much a cultural moment as a view — tourists, locals, the statue’s scale — and that mix is why this one’s my personal favorite.

🛡️ SafetyTraveler Safety Guide

Trilha do Corcovado is a well-trodden path, but don’t let that fool you—there’s grit to this journey. The trail can be steep, with sections that demand your full attention. Watch your footing on the rocky bits; a slip here could mean a bruised ego or worse.

Weather can shift quickly, so pack a light rain jacket and be ready for a sudden downpour. Early mornings are cooler, perfect for tackling the ascent before the sun blazes down.

Wildlife is part of the experience. Keep your distance from monkeys; they’re curious but can be aggressive if provoked.

Stay on the trail to protect the environment and respect fellow hikers. The reward? A panoramic view that makes every step worthwhile. When you finally reach the top, that first cold beer tastes like victory.

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

The Trilha do Corcovado is a sweat-soaked adventure that rewards you with a jaw-dropping view of Rio’s skyline and the iconic Christ the Redeemer. But be ready for the grind; the trail can be steep and slippery, especially after rain. It’s a challenge, but the moment you catch your breath at the summit, with the city sprawling below, you’ll know every step was worth it. Just don’t forget your water!

✈️ When did I visit Brazil?
Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
