Backpacking in de Cachaça de Paraty
👍 Recommendedfestival ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 29, 2026

Your plastic cup sloshes as a forró band kicks harder, brass slicing through humid night air while the smell of sugarcane, sea salt, and grilled cheese smoke wraps around you. This is the Festival de Cachaça de Paraty, in the colonial port town of Paraty on Brazil’s Costa Verde, between Rio and São Paulo. It’s a compact, booze-forward festival built around local cachaça distilleries, with live samba, forró, and rock pulling a mostly Brazilian crowd plus a sprinkling of backpackers who heard rumors in hostel kitchens. Expect three or four dense nights of tasting stands, loud stages, and cobblestones that get treacherous after your third sample. Worth it if you love music and spirits; pointless if you hate crowds or don’t drink.

  • Artisanal cachaça tastings — You get to taste dozens of small-batch cachaças straight from Paraty’s nearby alambiques: clear young caninha, barrel-aged amburana or jequitibá, and surprising flavoured expressions. Tasting side-by-side shows how terroir and wood change the spirit — great for learning what you actually like without the tourist traps. (Personal favorite.)
  • Distillery visits and demonstrations — Walk into working micro-distilleries and watch the copper pot stills, the fermentation pits, and the hand-made tools. It’s hands-on and honest: producers explain sugarcane harvest, yeast, and aging — not just a tasting table, but the story behind the bottle.

  • Masterclasses, sensory workshops and tastings — Short, focussed sessions teach you how to nosing and tasting cachaça like a pro, plus cocktail basics and pairing tips. They’re small, interactive, and actually useful if you want to drink smarter (and stretch your budget by buying better bottles instead of blasting through cheap mixes).
  • Live music, rodas and street parties — Samba, forró, choro and MPB spill out into the cobbled streets; there are stage shows but the real magic is the spontaneous rodas and impromptu dances. The music keeps things friendly and unpretentious — perfect for hanging out with locals and other travelers.
  • Local food stalls, pairings and cocktail contests — The festival’s barraquinhas serve caiçara seafood, pastéis, cheeses and feijoada-style bites designed to go with cachaça. Bartender battles and caipirinha twists add a playful edge — you can alternate street food plates with experimental cocktails and cheap-but-excellent home distillates.

🍲 FoodLocal Cuisine & Drinks

At the Festival de Cachaça de Paraty, your taste buds are in for a wild ride. Dive into local specialties like feijoada, a hearty black bean stew packed with flavors, or pastéis, crispy pastries filled with cheese or meat. The real star, though, is cachaça — Brazil’s beloved sugarcane spirit. Sample it straight or in a refreshing caipirinha, the festival’s unofficial drink.

Don’t miss the food stalls lining the streets, each offering a unique twist on traditional dishes. Be ready to share bites with fellow festival-goers; it’s all part of the experience. Lines can get long, so keep cash handy — some vendors don’t accept cards. Serving sizes are generous, so pace yourself; you want to savor every moment, not just the food. Embrace the vibrant atmosphere, and let the flavors fuel your adventure!

Call it good timing or luck, but I was able to celebrate Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro in February 2022, after a round trip in the north and east coast.
