Monte Verde, the highest point on São Vicente at roughly 774 meters, is often wrapped in cloud while Mindelo below sits in full sun. That makes it the one place on this arid island where the air turns cool and damp. It rises east of Mindelo in the north-west of Cabo Verde, and most walkers treat it as a half-day outing of about 8 to 12 kilometers return, with a steady climb of 500 to 600 meters. Difficulty is moderate: loose volcanic gravel, little shade and a wind that gets rude near the top. Scenery pays you back with views across the channel to Santo Antão and down onto Baía das Gatas’ coast. Reaching the lower slopes is easy, since shared minibuses (aluguers) run out of Mindelo, though the return can be slow to fill. Start early and carry more water than seems sensible. The summit is crowned by a cluster of radio masts, and the wind hums through their guy wires.

Monte Verde is a straightforward hike, but the exposure catches people out. The summit stands roughly 750 meters up, and there is almost no shade on the way, so the sun and the constant wind do the damage. Carry at least 2 liters of water per person, as nothing is sold on the slopes, and wear a hat and sunscreen even when it feels cool. Cloud sometimes sits on the top and cuts visibility fast, so go in the morning and turn back if it closes in. Tracks are loose gravel and volcanic rock, so wear shoes with real grip rather than sandals. Waymarking is thin, so download an offline map before leaving Mindelo. Livestock, mostly goats, are the only animals you will meet. Tell your guesthouse your route, and walk with a partner if you can.
