Backpacking in Chhlong
👍 Recommendedtown ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 8, 2026

Ten years ago Chhlong felt like a half-forgotten river outpost: crumbling French villas, kids swimming in the chocolate-brown Mekong, almost no foreigners. Today it’s still quiet, but there’s a faint backpacker footprint: a couple of restored colonial houses, a guesthouse with cold beer at sunset, tuk-tuks that actually expect you.

Chhlong sits on the Mekong in Kratié Province, between Kratié town and the road east toward Mondulkiri. For backpackers it works best as a slow overnight stop or a base for one full day: riverfront walks, a few fading colonial buildings, misty mornings over the water. It’s cheaper and calmer than Kratié, but with fewer food options and almost no nightlife; you’ll likely eat grilled fish by the river and be in bed early. Buses and minivans pass through, everything in town is walkable, and you’ll probably meet more curious locals than fellow travelers. Costs are low, petty crime is rare, and the reward is that soft Mekong light and a sense of Cambodia before mass tourism.

🌤️ When to go?Weather, crowds, and seasonal trade-offs

  • Topic: Weather — The dry season from November to April is your best bet. Expect clear skies and minimal rain, which means trails stay firm and the Mekong’s muddy banks dry out, making boat trips and riverside camping more enjoyable.

  • Topic: Temperature — Daytime highs hover around 30-35°C (86-95°F) in the dry months, with nights cooling to a comfortable 20-25°C (68-77°F). The wet season brings humidity and occasional spikes above 35°C (95°F), which can sap your energy fast.

  • Topic: Daylight Hours — Cambodia enjoys roughly 11-12 hours of daylight year-round, but the dry season’s clearer skies mean you get more usable light for trekking and exploring without the oppressive midday haze.

  • Topic: Crowds — Chhlong is off the beaten path, so crowds are light year-round. However, the dry season attracts a trickle of eco-tourists and locals escaping Phnom Penh, so expect a livelier vibe without losing the town’s quiet charm.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities — Dry months open up river excursions and forest hikes. The wet season floods some trails but brings lush greenery and bird migrations, rewarding those willing to brave the mud with vibrant wildlife sightings.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations — Accommodation and transport costs dip during the wet season due to fewer visitors, but the trade-off is dealing with unpredictable weather and limited access to some attractions.

Pro-tip: Aim for late November to February—when the air is crisp, the river calm, and the trails firm—to experience Chhlong’s raw beauty without the hassle of heat or mud slowing you down.

Venture away from the river, and the town quickly shifts into quieter, more residential zones with fewer traveler amenities and less chance to connect. The streets here are less lit at night, and local life takes over without the buffer of tourism. Choosing the riverside area isn’t just about convenience; it’s about plugging into the pulse of Chhlong’s modest but welcoming backpacker culture. You get the safety of a known traveler zone, the social buzz that makes solo travel less lonely, and the sensory backdrop of a town living in sync with the river’s flow.

🚌 Getting aroundHow to get from A to B

Chhlong moves at the pace of the Mekong itself—steady, unhurried, and shaped by the rhythms of the river and the seasons. This isn’t a place where timetables rule your day; instead, you’ll find yourself syncing with the natural flow of life here. The air carries the scent of wet earth and wood smoke, and the streets hum with the low murmur of locals going about their business, punctuated by the occasional call of a vendor. The town’s transit options reflect this relaxed vibe—expect flexibility, a bit of improvisation, and a chance to connect with the local pulse rather than a strict schedule.

  • Walking: The heart of Chhlong is compact enough to explore on foot, making walking your best bet for budget travelers. The dirt roads and shaded paths reveal everyday life up close—kids playing, fishermen prepping nets, and markets brimming with fresh produce. Walking costs nothing, lets you soak in the atmosphere, and is often faster than waiting for other transport.

  • Local Tuk-Tuks: These three-wheeled rides are the town’s informal taxis, usually available from early morning until dusk. Prices are negotiable but expect to pay around $1–$2 for short trips. They’re slow and bumpy but offer a direct, flexible way to get around, especially if you’re carrying gear or want to cover a bit more ground without breaking the bank.

  • Shared Pickup Trucks: For trips to nearby villages or the busier hubs along the Mekong, shared pickups are the go-to. They leave when full, so timing is unpredictable, but fares stay low—usually under $3. The ride is rough and open-air, with dust and wind as constant companions, but it’s a genuine slice of local life and a practical way to travel farther without a private vehicle.

  • Boat Ferries: Crossing the Mekong or heading downstream to other riverside communities is best done by boat. Ferries run several times a day but don’t expect a strict timetable—departures hinge on passenger numbers and river conditions. Tickets cost a couple of dollars, and the slow glide across the water offers a cool breeze and a chance to watch the riverbanks drift by, a welcome break from the heat and dust.

👛 Costs (as of 17 March 2025)Typical daily expenses

Backpacking in Chhlong, Cambodia, offers a raw, authentic slice of life along the Mekong, but it’s not a polished tourist hub, so costs stay modest and practical.
  • Dorm Accommodation: Options are sparse and basic here. Expect to pay around $5 to $10 per night for a simple guesthouse dorm or shared room. These places often have minimal amenities—think a fan, a mosquito net, and a hard mattress. The charm is in the quiet, local vibe rather than comfort.
  • Meals: Street food and local eateries dominate. A filling meal of grilled fish or rice with vegetables will run you about $1.50 to $3. Fresh fruit and snacks are even cheaper. Western-style cafes are rare, so embrace the local flavors and the smoky, earthy aroma of open-fire cooking.
  • Local Transport: Getting around means relying on tuk-tuks

  • Local Transport: Getting around means relying on tuk-tuks or motorbike taxis. Short rides within town cost roughly $1 to $2. If you’re venturing further, like to nearby villages or the Mekong riverbanks, budget $3 to $5. The roads are dusty and bumpy, so travel is slow but scenic.
  • Basic Activities/Entry Fees: Chhlong’s draw is its natural surroundings and village life rather than paid attractions. Entry fees to local temples or small community projects are minimal, usually under $1. Boat rides on the Mekong, if available, might cost $5 to $10 depending on distance and negotiation skills.
  • Miscellaneous Expenses: Bottled water, snacks, and small essentials add up to about $1 to $2 daily. Internet access is patchy; buying a local SIM card with data costs around $5 for a basic package, which can last several days if used sparingly.

All told, you’re looking at roughly $10 to $20 per day to live simply but fully in Chhlong. The low cost reflects the town’s off-the-beaten-path status and the straightforward lifestyle here. This budget lets you soak in the slow rhythms of rural Cambodia without fuss or frills.

Chhlong is generally safe, but a few practical tips can enhance your experience. Stay aware in crowded markets, where pickpockets might lurk. Keep your valuables close and your backpack zipped. Solo travelers should avoid wandering too far after dark; the streets can feel quiet, and it’s easy to lose your bearings.

Watch for common scams, like overly friendly locals offering “free” tours that end with a hefty bill. If someone approaches you with an offer, politely decline and keep moving.

Annoyances can include aggressive tuk-tuk drivers; a firm but friendly “no” usually does the trick. Embrace the local pace, and don’t rush. The charm of Chhlong lies in its simplicity, so take a moment to soak in the scent of street food and the warmth of the community.
