- Phnom Samkos summit — A proper Cardamoms climb: steep, often misty near the top, and worth it for the sweeping views across the forested ridges. It’s one of the highest points in the area, so expect cloud-forest vibes and a real sense of remoteness.
- Primary evergreen and cloud forest — Intact, ancient forest with giant trees, thick moss and ferns. This is where the sanctuary’s biodiversity really shows off: incredible plant life, shady trails and that cool, damp atmosphere you don’t get in lowland parks.

- Elusive wildlife hotspots — The sanctuary still shelters big, shy species: Asian elephants, gibbons, clouded leopards and other mammals are reported here. Sightings are rare and best attempted with local rangers, but the chance to hear gibbons at dawn is unforgettable.
- Birding and orchids — A top pick if you like birds or plants: watch for forest specialists and lots of orchids and other epiphytes clinging to the trunks. Dawn and dusk are when the birdlife is busiest.
- Remote trekking routes and village stays — Trails that thread through forest and occasional villages give a real “off-grid” feel. Multi-day walks with local guides often include simple homestays or campsites—low cost, high character.
- Ranger posts and conservation projects — Meeting rangers or visiting a research camp gives context to the place: you’ll learn about anti-poaching efforts, community conservation, and how fragile (and important) the sanctuary is. It makes the trip more meaningful.
