Most people only realize on the drive out that Waterton’s biggest perk is how compact everything is: trailheads, town, lakes, and viewpoints sit so close together you burn more calories hiking than commuting. Waterton Lakes National Park is tucked into the southwest corner of Alberta, right on the U.S. border where it links with Glacier National Park. For backpackers, it’s a paradox: small park, big-mountain feel. You get sharp peaks, deep lakes, legit multi-day routes like the Tamarack, and frequent wildlife sightings, but also real grizzlies, strong winds, and trails that can close without much warning. Access is easier than the Rockies giants, yet public transport is thin and entrance fees are standard national-park pricey.
