Backpacking in Old Friday Mosque
🏆 Top pickattraction ranked #1
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

A white-washed minaret rises above the old harbor of Moroni, and the call to prayer bounces off the water, the dhow hulls and the coral-stone walls around it. That is the Old Friday Mosque, and it is the reason to walk the medina. It stands on the waterfront of Moroni, the capital of the Comoros, on Grande Comore. The wow-factor is modest. You will not find a vast dome or glittering tile, just weathered stone, shadowed alleys that smell of salt, fish and clove, and carved wooden doors worn smooth by hands. That quiet is the appeal. Crowds are essentially absent, so you can linger without a tour group at your elbow. It is easy to reach on foot from central Moroni and costs nothing to look at, which makes it excellent value. Skip it if you want interior spectacle, because the main prayer hall is for worshippers. Come for the setting and the atmosphere. Dress modestly, with covered shoulders and knees, and avoid the midday prayer on Fridays.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #1 attraction in Comoros
Reasons people choose to visit here

Old Friday Mosque is the oldest religious landmark in Moroni's medina, and standing beside it you can read the island's history in the stone. Comoros sat on Indian Ocean trade routes linking East Africa, Arabia and Madagascar, and the Shafi'i Islamic tradition still shapes daily life here. That history is visible in the coral-stone walls and minaret facing the harbor, far more than in any museum label.

The second reason is access to the real Moroni. Few places in the Indian Ocean let you step from a working fishing and cargo harbor into a lived-in medina within a couple of minutes. Men play dominoes in doorways, women pass in colorful shawls, and the mosque anchors the whole neighborhood. You are watching a living community, not a staged site.

For a backpacker on the Comoros route, this is the easiest cultural milestone in the capital. It needs no tickets, no guide and no planning. Pair it with a slow wander through the old town alleys, and you leave with a better sense of Comorian identity than most beaches or volcano hikes will give you.

💡 HighlightsMust-see experiences and standout moments

  1. Old Friday Mosque exterior and minaret: The reason you came. The white-washed walls and tall minaret face the harbor, and the details reward close looking: the coral stone, the weathered plaster and the way the building sits tight against the neighboring houses. Respect prayer times, and treat the interior as closed unless invited.
  2. The old harbor: Right beside the mosque, wooden boats unload fish and cargo while gulls wheel overhead. It smells of diesel, salt and drying catch, and it is the best place to see Moroni working.
  3. Medina alleys: The narrow lanes behind the mosque twist between old merchant houses. Look for carved wooden doors, some with Swahili-style patterns, and keep your voice low, because these are family streets.
  4. Badjanani Mosque: A short walk away, this mosque is a good companion

  4. Badjanani Mosque: A short walk away, this mosque is a good companion piece. Its architecture is different in style and age, so seeing both helps you read how the town grew. Outside prayer times you may be able to view the exterior and surroundings comfortably.
  5. Volo Volo Market: The capital's main market sits nearby and is loud, crowded and fragrant. Vanilla, ylang-ylang, cloves, tropical fruit and cloth stalls make it the best place to buy small, authentic souvenirs and see daily life.
  6. Waterfront stroll at the call to prayer: Walk the harbor edge as the call rolls out over the water. The light softens against the white stone, and locals gather along the sea wall. It costs nothing and takes as long as you like.
For a first visit, start with the exterior of Old Friday Mosque from the harbor side, then let the alleys lead you onward.

🌤️ When to go?Seasonal considerations and timing

  • Dry Season (May to October): The best months for Old Friday Mosque, in the old royal town of Mitsamiouli on Grande Comore, with daytime highs around 26 to 29°C (79 to 84°F), nights near 20 to 22°C (68 to 72°F), low humidity and little rain. Days run about 11 to 12 hours of light, so you can walk the old quarter and the shoreline in comfortable conditions.
  • Wet Season (November to April): Expect heat of 29 to 32°C (84 to 90°F), heavy humidity and afternoon downpours that can flood dirt lanes. Cyclone risk peaks from January to March, and boats and flights can be disrupted. Light is about 12 to 13 hours, but mornings are the only reliable dry window.

  • Ramadan: Daytime life slows, food stalls close until dusk, and non-Muslim visits to the mosque are best arranged outside prayer times, especially Friday midday.
Aim for June or September, when the weather is dry and the diaspora rush has not yet filled the flights.

Moroni is the practical base for Old Friday Mosque, since it holds nearly all the budget guesthouses, restaurants and the airport on Grande Comore. Staying near the medina and the harbor suits solo travelers best. You can walk to the mosque, markets and cafes, and meeting other foreigners is easy because the few budget places are small and chatty. The streets are generally calm, but avoid unlit stretches of the waterfront after dark and take a shared taxi at night.

The Volo Volo market area is the second option. It is louder and busier, with cheap food and frequent shared taxis, but fewer rooms. Expect simple family-run guesthouses with fans, shared or basic bathrooms and breakfast of bread, tea and sometimes eggs.

The beaches north of the capital, around Itsandra, suit those who want sea swims and quiet evenings, though you will rely on taxis to reach the mosque. Dress modestly everywhere, and ask your host about the day’s prayer times. Few places take cards, so bring euros in cash.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Many travelers photograph Old Friday Mosque in a rush from a taxi window, then move on to the beaches. Do it the other way around. Walk in on foot in the late afternoon, dressed modestly, and ask permission before pointing a camera at people. Then let the harbor and the alleys fill the time before the call to prayer.
