Backpacking in Fiestas Palmares
🏆 Top pickfestival ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 27, 2026

Most people picture Fiestas Palmares as some quaint village fair with a couple of mariachis and a sleepy parade. Wrong. This thing is a full-on party machine that can chew you up if you arrive unprepared. It explodes every January in Palmares, a town in the hills northwest of San José, on the road toward San Ramón and the Pacific.

For backpackers, Fiestas Palmares is basically Costa Rica’s answer to a small-scale festival circuit: huge beer tents, commercial Latin pop and reggaeton, ranchera, live bands, DJs, rodeos, and crowds that swing from families in the daytime to hard-partying locals at night. It usually runs for around two weeks, so you can drop in for a day or accidentally lose half your trip there. I go for one or two nights max: hit a concert, watch the tope (horse parade), then bail before my budget and liver surrender. Worth it if you like chaos and crowds; skip it if you crave quiet.

💡 HighlightsKey sights and experiences for travelers

  • Big live-music concerts — Palmares is famous for stacking big stages and a wild mix of genres: local Costa Rican bands, Latin dance, rock and pop. The crowd energy is what makes it special — everyone singing along, impromptu dancing, and that communal buzz you won’t get at a regular gig.
  • Peñas and social-club parties — small, raucous local dance nights where neighborhood “peñas” set up music, food and booze. These are where you meet locals, learn the moves, and feel the festival’s authentic pulse. (My personal favorite — way more character than the main stages.)
  • Carnival midway and rides — a proper fairground with old-school rides, game booths and flashing lights. It’s cheap thrills and nostalgia: families, teens, and backpackers all squeezing into the same cotton-candy-lined chaos.

  • Rodeo and equestrian traditions — expect horse parades (topes), rodeo shows and cowboy culture that are deeply local. The skill and pageantry are entertaining to watch, and they give the festival a rural Costa Rican flavor you won’t find in city fiestas.
  • Street food, artisan stalls and people-watching — endless stalls selling empanadas, grilled meats, sweet corn, fresh fruit juices and handmade crafts. Tasting your way through the booths while watching the crowd is half the fun — a sensory shortcut into local life.

For those who crave a bit of nature, look into staying in the surrounding hills. There are eco-lodges and cabins that offer stunning views and a chance to escape the crowds. Just be ready for a bit of a trek to the festival, but the fresh air and scenery will keep your spirits high.

Avoid the tourist traps in the main towns; they can drain your wallet and energy. Stick to these areas, and you’ll preserve both for the moments that truly matter.
