Backpacking in Jankovac Forest Park
👀 For curious travelersnational park ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated July 30, 2026

Most people assume Jankovac Forest Park is just a tiny picnic spot you tack onto a bigger Croatia trip; it’s small, yes, but it’s a real hiking base, not a roadside rest. Tucked in Papuk Mountain in Slavonia, inland and far from the coast, it gives you waterfalls, beech forest, caves, and easy-to-moderate trails with decent wildlife if you move quietly. Access is simpler by car, entrance fees are low, and crowds are mostly local weekenders, which keeps the vibe calm but means limited public transport and fewer budget beds than you’d expect. Think guesthouses and a basic mountain lodge rather than wild camping. Compared with Plitvice or Krka, Jankovac is cheaper, less dramatic, and far less choreographed; you trade big postcard views for slower, quieter days that don’t drain your wallet or your patience.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Chain of lakes and ponds — A series of mirror-like water basins tucked into the valley, perfect for calm photos and quiet reflection; the larger pools pick up the surrounding beech and oak canopy, so the scenery feels doubled in the water.
  • Cascading streams and small waterfalls — Tiny cascades and riffles crisscross the park, creating a soundtrack of water and plenty of picture-perfect spots; follow the streamside paths and you’ll find dozens of little falls rather than a single showy one.
  • Ancient beech and oak forest — Old, dense stands give the place a real primeval vibe; in spring you get carpets of wildflowers and in autumn the color show is exceptional. The shade is literal and welcome on hot days.

  • Papuk Geopark geology & viewpoints — Jankovac sits inside Papuk’s UNESCO Geopark, so you get interesting volcanic and sedimentary rock outcrops and viewpoints that open onto rolling Slavonian landscapes and ridgelines.
  • Well-marked hiking trails — A tidy network of loops and connecting routes lets you tailor a walk from a relaxed 30-minute stroll to a full-day hike up Papuk’s ridges; signage is generally good, so exploring off the main path is doable.
  • Wildlife and birdwatching — Deer, foxes and boar are common signs (more often seen or heard at dawn/dusk), and the park is great for woodpeckers, owls and small songbirds. Bring binoculars and move quietly.
  • Park lodge, picnic clearings and traditional atmosphere — Rustic visitor facilities, picnic spots and a classic forest-lodge feel make for easy day trips; it’s the kind of place where you can sit, eat, and still feel like you’re deep in the woods.
