- Vaganski vrh — Velebit’s highest peak (the real summit experience) with panoramic views across islands, the Biokovo massif and the Lika hinterland. It’s a proper alpine day when you climb it — tough approaches but huge pay-off views that prove Velebit isn’t just “coastal hills”.
- Zavratnica Bay — A narrow, fjord-like inlet cut into the Velebit sea slope; small boat trips show steep cliffs, crystal water and an exposed WWII wreck visible from the surface. The scale and mood here are very different from nearby beaches — rugged and secluded.
- Starigrad-Paklenica village and harbor — The real gateway to southern Velebit: a compact fishing town with honest konobas, simple guesthouses and immediate access to trailheads and canyon entrances. Staying here lets you mix mountain days with late-night seafood without long transfers.
- Baške Oštarije and shepherding culture — (hidden gem) Small highland crossroads and pastures on the southern slopes where local shepherds still work the land; try homemade cheese, raw-milk stories and rustic homestays. It’s a chance to see traditional mountain life that’s rapidly disappearing elsewhere.
- Jablanac harbor — (hidden gem) A quiet coastal village tucked under Velebit that most day-trippers miss: straightforward boat links to nearby islands, tiny fish restaurants, and short hikes up into the Velebit slopes for views without crowds. Great for combining a relaxed seaside evening with a mountain morning.
