Backpacking in Cabaret Tropicana
🌟 Highlightattraction ranked #5
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 20, 2026

Cabaret Tropicana is famous for its open-air floor show, dancers in towering feathered headdresses moving between palm trees and mirrored arches under the stars. What gets overlooked is the live band: the music is worth the ticket even if the choreography isn’t your thing. The club sits in Marianao, in the western part of Havana, Cuba’s capital, well away from the Old Town. Expect tour groups, assigned tables and drink prices far above any bar in town. Skip the add-on dinner. Come for the show and the dancing. I paid US$5 for a mojito there, and it arrived strong and cold in a plastic cup while a trumpet solo cut through the trees. Worth it. Book a seat in advance and plan a taxi back, since the neighborhood is quiet after midnight.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #5 attraction in Cuba
What makes this attraction worth visiting

Cabaret Tropicana matters because it is one of the last places where the golden-age Havana nightclub scene still runs six nights a week. Founded in 1939 in the gardens of a villa, it has hosted the show format for generations, and the staging among real trees is unlike any indoor theater. You see performers on elevated walkways between the palms, which gives the choreography depth you cannot get from a stage.

The second reason is music. Cuban dance bands, rhythm sections and brass players carry the whole night, and for a traveler who has only heard son and salsa on street corners, this is the polished version. It also fits neatly into a Havana itinerary as the one big evening out, a counterweight to the walking days in the old streets. If you only splurge once in the capital on entertainment, … read more 👉

If you only splurge once in the capital on entertainment, this is the most recognizable place to do it, and the price reflects that.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Cabaret Tropicana

  1. The main floor show: the signature production, with dozens of dancers in sequined costumes and feathered headdresses, performed outdoors beneath the night sky.
  2. The Arcos de Cristal: the glass-and-concrete arched hall from the 1950s, a landmark of Cuban modernist architecture and the covered counterpart to the open stage.
  3. The live orchestra: a full band with brass, percussion and singers drives every number, playing classic Cuban rhythms from mambo to cha-cha-cha.
  4. The elevated walkways: dancers move among the tall palms on raised platforms, so you watch the action at several levels.
  5. The garden grounds: the tree-filled setting around the stage keeps the night cooler and gives the show its distinct look, especially when the lights go up through the leaves.
  6. The welcome drink and rum bar: your ticket

  6. The welcome drink and rum bar: your ticket often includes a drink, and the bar pours Cuban rum, a good way to sample Havana Club in its home country.
  7. The audience dance moments: some numbers pull guests onto the floor, a short and lively chance to try a few steps with the cast.
Tickets for the show should be booked ahead, ideally a day or more before, because seating is assigned and popular nights sell out.

🌤️ When to go?Best time to visit Cabaret Tropicana

  • Dry Season (November to April): Cabaret Tropicana runs its open-air shows year-round, but these months are the most comfortable, with Havana highs of 26 to 29°C (79 to 84°F) and nights of 18 to 22°C (64 to 72°F). Tickets sell out faster around Christmas, New Year and Easter, and room rates in the city climb.
  • Hot, Wet Season (May to October): Expect 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F) with humidity, plus afternoon downpours. Evening shows can be delayed or moved under cover during storms, but seats are easier to book and prices soften.
  • Hurricane Peak (August to October): Storms are most likely in September and October, so flexible plans matter.
  • Daylight: About 10.5 hours in December and 13.5 in June, and the show starts after dark either way.
Book your seat a few days ahead in winter, and pick a weeknight for a calmer crowd.

🛏️ Where to stay?Best areas and accommodation options

Vedado is the best area to stay for Cabaret Tropicana, about 15 to 25 minutes by taxi from the show in the Marianao district, and it is where most backpackers end up. Its grid of leafy streets around calle 23 (La Rampa) and calle L has a large number of casas particulares, which are family-run rooms that cost US$20 to 40 a night. They are the social heart of budget travel here, with hosts who arrange taxis, breakfast and tips on safe routes at night. Centro Habana is the next choice, with lower prices and a rougher edge, close to the Malecón seafront where young Cubans gather at dusk. It suits travelers who want grit and energy, though streets are dimmer and busier at night.

Old Havana (Habana Vieja) has the densest choice of hostel-style rooms and the easiest company for solo travelers, plus the main sights on foot. It is about 30 minutes from the cabaret by taxi.

Book a room with a host who will call a trusted driver for your return after the show. Staying in Marianao itself is quiet and offers little social life.

FAQTraveler FAQ

Plan on about three hours for Cabaret Tropicana, and a full evening once you add travel. Doors typically open around 8 pm, the show lasts roughly 90 minutes to two hours, and you should arrive 30 to 45 minutes early to settle in. The ride from Vedado takes 15 to 25 minutes each way.
Cabaret Tropicana is worth the ticket of about US$70 to 90 if you want one big, polished Cuban night out, with dancers, live orchestra and costumes in an open-air garden venue in Marianao. The price usually covers a drink or part of a rum bottle, which softens the cost. If you are on a tight budget, free live music in Havana’s casas de la música costs far less.
Take a taxi from central Havana to Cabaret Tropicana, on calle 72 in Marianao, a ride of 15 to 30 minutes and US$10 to 15 each way from Vedado or Old Havana. Many casa hosts and tour desks book a transfer with the ticket. Public buses are slow and unreliable at night, so a pre-arranged return driver is the practical choice.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackKey takeaways before you go

Cabaret Tropicana trips up travelers who show up without a reservation or pay for the full dinner package. I would book the show seat only, eat in the city earlier, and arrange a round-trip taxi so the ride home is settled before the first drumbeat.

✈️ When did I visit Cuba?
As part of my 1.5 year travel around the world trip, I visited Cuba for 6 weeks in February, March 2016, being extremely lucky that that coincided with the free concert of The Rolling Stones.
