Backpacking in Playa Esmeralda
🌟 Highlightbeach ranked #7
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 22, 2026

The first thing I noticed stepping off the bus was the sound: a soft hiss of surf behind a line of sea grape, then the shock of pale sand and shallow water the color of its name. Playa Esmeralda sits in the northeast of Cuba, in Holguín province, a short way from Guardalavaca. The beach is clean, raked and wide, with calm, shallow swimming that suits beginners, and a reef offshore gives you modest snorkeling. Skip it if you want nightlife, a hostel scene or a wild feel. Resort hotels line the sand, so the coast has an organized, quiet air, and budget food is thin on the beach itself. Casas particulares in nearby Guardalavaca are the better value. Carry cash and snacks before you arrive.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #7 beach in Cuba
Why visitors keep coming back

Playa Esmeralda earns its stop for reasons that have little to do with partying. The main one is the water: a gently shelving bay with a clear, turquoise shallows, where you can wade out a long way and still stand. Backpackers on the long haul across eastern Cuba use it as a calm break from Holguín’s dusty streets, and it takes little planning to reach from the city. The second reason is the neighbor. Guardalavaca’s casas particulares sit a short ride away, so you can sleep cheaply and spend the day on a beach that looks like the resort brochures. Add the nearby Chorro de Maíta archaeological site and the beach becomes one half of an easy day with history attached. It is not a social hub. You come here to float, read and recharge, then carry on toward Santiago or Baracoa with sand still in your bag.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. The emerald shallows: the bay that gave the beach its name has pale sand and water that stays shallow and clear for a long way out. It is the finest place on this stretch to swim without a current to worry about.
  2. Snorkeling the near reef: coral patches sit close to shore, and the calm days bring small reef fish within easy reach. Bring your own mask, since gear is limited.
  3. A long beach walk: stroll the length of the sand to the quieter stretches, with fishermen and families away from the hotel fronts.
  4. Chorro de Maíta cemetery museum: a short ride inland, this is the largest known aboriginal burial site in the Caribbean, with skeletons displayed where they were found. It adds depth to a beach day, and the entry fee is a few dollars.
  5. Sunset on the sand: with the resorts keeping the evenings quiet,

  5. Sunset on the sand: with the resorts keeping the evenings quiet, the beach turns calm and cool as the sun drops, which suits a slow walk or a drink on the shore.
Playa Esmeralda itself needs no ticket, and only Chorro de Maíta charges an entry fee, payable at the gate without booking.

🌤️ When to go?Choosing the right time of year

November to April is the window for Playa Esmeralda, with dry days and calm, clear water.
  • Dry Season (Nov to Apr): Highs run 27 to 30°C (81 to 86°F), nights 19 to 23°C (66 to 73°F), and rain is rare. Daylight lasts roughly 10.5 to 12 hours. Canadian and European resort groups fill the nearby hotels from December to March, and prices are highest around Christmas and New Year.
  • Wet Season (May to Oct): Expect 30 to 33°C (86 to 91°F), heavy humidity, and afternoon downpours that usually clear within an hour. Rooms and casas particulares cost less, and the sand is emptier. Days are about 12 to 13.5 hours long.
  • Hurricane Peak (Aug to Oct): Storms can cancel transport and boat trips, so keep your dates flexible.
  • Summer Holidays (July and August): Cuban families visit, so the beach gets livelier on weekends.

I would aim for late April or early November, when the weather is good and rooms cost less.

Guardalavaca, about 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from Playa Esmeralda, is the best base for backpackers. Most of the beach itself is taken up by all-inclusive resorts, which cost roughly US$100 to 250 a night per person and rarely suit a tight budget.
Guardalavaca village has casas particulares (private rooms in Cuban homes) for about US$20 to 40 a night for a double, usually with breakfast for US$4 to 6 extra. The hosts cook, arrange taxis, and know which restaurants are worth the walk. It is the most social option here, because the same handful of streets, a small public beach, and a few bars are shared by independent travelers and Cubans alike.
Banes, around 30 to 40 minutes inland, is cheaper still at about US$15 to 25 a room. It is a quiet working town with a good local museum and few other foreigners. You will need a taxi (US$25 to 35 each way) or a shared ride to reach the coast, so it suits those who want a Cuban-town base more than an easy beach routine.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

Playa Esmeralda is a sheltered, well-managed beach, and the main risks are sun and the occasional petty theft. A reef offshore keeps the water calm and shallow for most of the year, with gentle waves and no notable rips or tides. Swimming is easy, though winter northerly winds can bring some surf and a red flag, so check before you go in. Sea urchins sit on rocks at the edges, so water shoes help. Jellyfish and sharks are not a concern here.
The sun is strong all year, and shade is limited on the sand outside the resort areas, so bring a hat and reef-safe sunscreen. Afternoon storms roll in during the wet season, so leave the water when thunder starts. Keep valuables in your room and carry only what you need, as bags left unattended on the sand sometimes disappear.

FAQCommon questions from travelers

Playa Esmeralda lies on Cuba’s northeast coast in Holguín province, about 50 km (31 miles) north of Holguín city. A taxi from Holguín takes roughly 1 hour and costs about US$40 to 60 each way, and from Guardalavaca it is a 10 to 15 minute ride for around US$5 to 8. Viazul buses and organized transfers run to Guardalavaca from Havana (about 12 to 14 hours by road), Santiago de Cuba, and Holguín, so you can reach the beach in a day.
Playa Esmeralda is excellent for swimming, as the reef-protected water is calm, clear, and shallow, and good for casual snorkeling near the reef edges and rocky points. Surfing is not an option, because the waves are small and gentle for most of the year. Snorkel gear can be rented from the resort water sports centers for about US$10 to 20, and the best visibility is from November to April.
Playa Esmeralda itself is free to visit, as Cuban beaches are public and you can walk on the sand without paying. Access is often through the resort grounds, and guards may ask you to show a wristband or have a reason to enter, though most travelers walk in without trouble. Sunbeds and day passes at the resorts cost roughly US$30 to 80, while a drink or lunch at a beach bar runs about US$5 to 15.
⚠️ Things can change over time, so always validate details locally before you go.

We 💚 feedbackParting advice and final tips

Playa Esmeralda is easy to write off as a resort strip, yet the sand is public, and most people overlook how close the Chorro de Maíta burial site sits. I would pair the two in one day, swim in the morning, and head inland after lunch.

✈️ When did I visit Cuba?
As part of my 1.5 year travel around the world trip, I visited Cuba for 6 weeks in February, March 2016, being extremely lucky that that coincided with the free concert of The Rolling Stones.
