Backpacking in Jizerská magistrála
🌟 Highlighthike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

You have to choose: do you commit to the full Jizerská magistrála and feel it in your legs for days, or cherry-pick a shorter section and risk FOMO when you see the map later. That choice matters, because this long, rolling route across the Jizera Mountains in northern Czechia (above Liberec, near the Polish border) is all about rhythm and distance. In winter it’s a groomed cross-country ski highway; in summer it turns into a broad hiking and cycling track through dark spruce forest, peat bogs, and big sky views from places like Smědava and Jizerka. It’s easy to reach by bus from Liberec, and the gradients are kind, but the length and repetition can grind you down compared with punchier Czech routes like Krkonoše ridgelines. I loved the quiet, hated the occasional crowds near main trailheads.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Smrk (the ridge summit and lookout) — The highest point on the magistrála (about 1,120 m) so you get proper ridge walking and wide panoramas into both the Jizera and Krkonoše ranges. Short scramble up to the tower feels rewarding, and on a clear day the views make the slog worth it — especially at sunrise or late afternoon light.
  2. Jizerka hamlet — A tiny, tucked-away cluster of wooden mountain houses, small streams and old glassmakers’ cottages. It’s the kind of place where the trail slows down, birds chatter louder than traffic, and you actually feel like you’ve slipped back a century (personal favorite — love the quiet, the mossy brooks and the out-of-the-way vibe).

  3. Souš Reservoir — A calm stretch of water that breaks up the high-forest scenery and gives you mirror-like reflections at dawn. Good for wildlife spotting (waterfowl) and for a flat, photogenic detour when you want a break from bog and spruce.
  4. High peat bogs (Jizerské rašeliniště) — Open, otherworldly moorland with stunted pines, sphagnum mats and wooden boardwalks. These raised bogs are rare in Central Europe and offer a completely different atmosphere from forested trails — eerie, quiet and full of odd plant life.
  5. Traditional mountain villages and glassmaking spots (Bedřichov, Kořenov, etc.) — The magistrála threads past small ski centers, mountain chalets and workshops that remind you this region has a living craft and outdoors culture. Great places to stop for a hot soup, locally blown glass souvenirs, or to catch cross-country skiers’ legacy if you’re hiking in summer.

  • Crowds: Summer weekends attract local hikers and tourists, especially near popular spots. Shoulder seasons see fewer boots on the trail, letting you claim the path with less noise and more space.
  • Seasonal Activities: Winter transforms the magistrála into a cross-country skiing haven, shifting the vibe entirely. Spring and autumn bring wildflowers and fiery foliage, adding a sensory punch to your trek.
  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and services peak in summer, nudging prices up. Booking in shoulder seasons can save cash and snag better spots without sacrificing the trail’s essence.
Pro-tip: Aim for late spring or early autumn to dodge the heat, crowds, and inflated costs—this window balances trail conditions and atmosphere like a well-timed punch.
