Backpacking in Hostýnské vrchy
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #10
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 15, 2026

Most people online sell Hostýnské vrchy as a gentle pilgrimage zone, but if you link the ridgeline trails properly you can rack up more vertical than on many “serious” Czech mountain days. This low, forested range sits in eastern Czechia, between Zlín and Bystřice pod Hostýnem, and feels like a local training ground more than a postcard star. The hike gives rolling spruce and beech woods, sudden meadows with wide Moravian views, and the punchy climb up to Svatý Hostýn’s basilica, where a kiosk beer tastes earned, not bought. It’s easy to reach by train and bus, and less dramatic than Beskydy or Jeseníky, but also less crowded, cheaper, and perfect when you want real miles without alpine drama.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Hostýn Basilica and pilgrimage complex — The hilltop basilica is the cultural heart of the range: Baroque/Neo-Baroque church, Stations of the Cross climbing the slope and small chapels scattered along the ascent. It’s not just architecture — the place still draws pilgrims, so you get that lived-in, spiritual atmosphere that’s rare on most hikes.
  2. Hostýn summit panorama — At the very top you get wide views over the lowlands of eastern Moravia, a great spot for sunrise or sunset when the light flattens the patchwork fields into color. Personal favorite: I like to sit up there with a thermos and watch fog bank into the valleys below — simple, quiet, unforgettable.

  3. Ridgelines of beech and mixed forest — The walking itself stands out: long wooded ridges, mossy trunks and shady corridors that change massively with the seasons. Spring brings wildflowers and orchids; autumn is bright foliage and easy, soft footing. Trails are well marked by the Czech blaze system, so you can relax and enjoy the trees.
  4. Small Moravian villages and roadside chapels — Unlike national-park-only hikes, Hostýnské vrchy threads through working countryside: little villages, painted chapels, old stone walls and the occasional hospoda (pub) to rest in. That human-scale scenery and local hospitality give the trail character you won’t find on purely wild ridges.
  5. Wildlife, fungi and seasonal foraging — The forests are good for quiet wildlife sightings (deer, foxes, woodpeckers) and, in season, excellent mushroom and berry picking. It’s a very sensory hike — smells, sounds and textures — just respect private land and local rules when foraging.

🛡️ SafetyScams, Hazards, and Annoyances

The trails of Hostýnské vrchy offer a mix of gentle slopes and rugged patches, making navigation straightforward for most hikers. However, don’t underestimate the weather; it can shift quickly. Dress in layers and pack a light rain jacket.

Footing can be tricky in spots, especially after rain, so watch for slick rocks and roots. Keep your pace steady, and don’t rush—this isn’t a race.

Wildlife is present but generally shy. If you spot a deer or a wild boar, admire from a distance; loud noises can startle them.

Be mindful of your trash; leave no trace. The reward? A cold beer at a local pub after a day of exploring, where you can relive the trail’s beauty and camaraderie.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on hiking the Hostýnské vrchy

The Hostýnské vrchy trails are a breath of fresh air, with every step revealing lush forests and sweeping vistas that feel like a secret just for you. But be ready for some rocky paths that can test your ankles—this isn’t a stroll in the park. Embrace the challenge; the payoff is a cold beer at a local pub, where stories of the trail flow as freely as the drinks.
