- Grauer’s (eastern lowland) gorillas — Maiko is one of the few remaining strongholds for these hugely endangered, big-bodied gorillas. Seeing signs of them (and with luck a distant group) is a reminder you’re in truly wild, fragile habitat.
- Pristine primary rainforest — vast, largely untouched lowland and transitional forest that feels genuinely remote: towering emergent trees, dense understory, and that humid, alive smell. It’s the kind of jungle that still surprises even seasoned trekkers.

- Rivers, waterfalls and rugged trekking routes — the park’s river valleys, rapids and forested ridges make for tough but rewarding hikes. Trails are infrequently maintained, so expect rough, adventurous routes and big payoff views or quiet river camps.
