- Nyamuragira volcano — Less-visited than Nyiragongo but no less wild: vast black lava fields, recent flows and a moonscape feel that’s fascinating for anyone into geology or stark landscapes. Access is tougher, so it feels like a real off-the-beaten-track adventure.
- Rwindi Plains — Open savanna within the park where you can do game drives for elephants, buffalo, hippos and predators against a backdrop of distant volcanoes. Wide horizons and good light make this a classic African-wildlife experience inside a uniquely volcanic setting.
- Lake Edward shoreline and boat trips — Short boat outings show huge hippo pods, crocodiles, fishing activity and lots of waterbirds, with volcanoes looming across the water. It’s peaceful, photogenic and a nice break from trekking.
- Albertine Rift endemics and biodiversity — Virunga sits in the Albertine Rift, so its forests and mountains host many regionally restricted birds and plants. Birders and naturalists will find turacos, raptors, sunbirds and a richness of life you won’t see in more ordinary parks.
