Backpacking in Nexø
👌 Worth visitingtown ranked #16
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 16, 2026

Everyone talks about Nexø because of the Bornholm sunshine and the smoked herring, but what actually matters for you is how quietly useful this little port town is as a base. Nexø sits on the east coast of Bornholm, out in the Baltic but still firmly Denmark, and it feels more working harbor than postcard village. For backpackers, that’s a plus: cheaper rooms than Gudhjem or Svaneke, easy bus links up and down the coast, and quick access to beaches and coastal paths rather than nightlife. The center is compact, a bit worn around the edges, with a few cafés where you can linger over coffee while the smell of fish and seaweed drifts in from the docks. It’s calm, safe, and not especially social unless you bring your own crew or stay somewhere small and friendly, but as a practical stop between Bornholm’s prettier towns, or a base for slow coastal days, Nexø quietly earns its place on the route.

  • Working Quay and Fish Auction Area — Where you can see the practical side of Nexø’s fishing industry: nets, crates, boats being serviced and, occasionally, auctions or informal sales right off the quay.
  • Local Workshops and Galleries — Small artist studios and craft shops tucked into town (ceramics, glass, woodwork) where Bornholm’s maker tradition is visible up close—good for buying unique souvenirs and watching artisans at work.
  • Nexø Strand (the town beach) — A sandy, accessible beach within town limits for a quick swim, beachcombing, or an evening walk—calmer than the big tourist beaches but very local in feel.
