- Birket Qarun (the lake itself) — A huge, shallow saline lake that dominates the Fayoum depression; its wide, low horizon and ever-changing surface create a raw, open landscape you don’t get at the Nile. The scale and colors—especially when the wind ruffles the water—make it a simple, stunning focus for photography or a lazy day of watching the light.
- Birdwatching and migratory waterfowl — The protected area is an important stop on the Afro-Eurasian flyway. Expect pelicans, herons, egrets, cormorants, various ducks and gulls, and occasional flocks of flamingo-like visitors in season. Good binoculars pay off here.
- Islands and nesting colonies (boat trips) — Receding water has left small islands that host coastal bird colonies. Short local boat trips (organized by fishermen) let you get close

- Islands and nesting colonies (boat trips) — Receding water has left small islands that host coastal bird colonies. Short local boat trips (organized by fishermen) let you get close to terns, cormorants and other breeders while keeping disturbance low.
- Reedbeds and wetlands — The fringe of reeds and shallow marshes is alive with smaller birds, waders and insect life. These habitats change with the seasons and are great for quiet walking, macro-photography and listening to wildlife.
- Salt flats and mudflats — Wide salt pans and exposed mud flats form stark, graphic patterns—cracked crusts, shimmer pools and surprising reflections. Walks across these textures are short and otherworldly; bring sturdy shoes and water.
- Kom Aushim / Karanis ruins — On the lake’s edge are Greco-Roman remains that tie the landscape to thousands of years of human history. It’s a nice mix: nature one minute, ancient walls and pottery the next.
- Sunsets, low dunes and limestone edges — The lake’s flatness makes for epic sunsets; nearby low sand ridges and limestone escarpments give quick, easy climbs for better views. Perfect for late-afternoon walks and wide landscape shots.
