- Phophonyane Falls — The obvious headliner: a dramatic drop and spray framed by green cliffs. Best after the rains when the falls are thundering; great photo angles from the base and the upper viewpoints.
- River gorge and rock terraces — The river has carved a mini-canyon with smooth rock shelves and terraces. It’s worth scrambling down a short way to see the sculpted rock and listen to the water work its way through the gorge.
- Indigenous scarp forest — Pockets of cool, shady forest full of ferns, lianas and mature trees. The contrast between the dry surrounding hills and this lush strip is striking, and it’s where a lot of the reserve’s quiet wildlife hangs out.

- Hiking trails and viewpoints — Several marked walks from short loops to longer rambles, each with lookouts over the falls, river and valley. Trails are well graded but can be steep in places — sturdy shoes recommended.
- Rock pools and swimming spots — Natural pools below the falls and along the river where you can cool off on hot days. Depths and currents change with the season, so test before jumping in and mind the slippery rocks.
- Birdwatching and butterflies — Riverine and forest habitats bring a steady trickle of bird species and colorful butterflies. Bring binoculars and listen for the calls; early morning is the sweetest time for sightings.
- Close wildlife encounters — Expect to spot small mammals and reptiles: monkeys, small antelope and shyer forest creatures at dawn or dusk. Encounters are usually brief and low-key, which keeps the place feeling wild and intimate.
