Backpacking in Koli
🏆 Top picknational park ranked #4
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 1, 2026

The first real decision at Koli is simple but important: do you base yourself in the small Koli village with services, or go lighter and treat it as a day-hit from Joensuu. That choice decides how much you carry, how much you spend, and how much quiet you actually get. Koli National Park sits in North Karelia, Eastern Finland, on the western shore of Lake Pielinen. For backpackers, it’s compact, scenic hill country rather than wild epic—short, steepish trails, forest and lake views, and those classic Ukko-Koli panoramas that Finland uses in brochures. Trails are well-marked, wildlife is shy, and access is easy by Finnish standards, but buses are infrequent and you pay a premium to sleep near the park. No entrance fee, but food and beds add up. Compared with Patvinsuo or Hiidenportti, Koli is busier, more polished, less remote, but far easier to sample in a tight itinerary.

  • Akka-Koli and Paha-Koli ridges — Smaller sister peaks to Ukko-Koli that offer quieter ridge walks, wind-battered pines and slightly different viewpoints; great if you want the same dramatic scenery without the crowds.

  • Ancient pine forests and crags — Old Scots pines clinging to exposed quartzite rock create the park’s postcard look — twisted trunks, thick lichens, and a very Finnish, windswept mood that photographers and silence-seekers love.
  • Glacial geology and rock formations — Smooth, scoured bedrock, clefts and small kettle hollows show the ice-age handiwork up close; you can literally trace the glacier’s path underfoot while hiking the ridges.
  • Well-marked hiking network — Routes range from short boardwalk loops and easy lookout strolls to longer ridge hikes; signs are clear, trails are varied (rock steps, boardwalks, forest singletrack) and you can tailor a half-day or full-day outing without overplanning.
  • Seasonal spectacles and wildlife — Autumn paints the hills in flaming reds and golds, winter turns the fells into a quiet snowpark, and wildlife encounters (moose tracks, capercaillie calls, and the occasional raptor over the lake) make every trip feel alive.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and services spike in summer. Off-season rates drop significantly, but some facilities close or reduce hours.

Pro-tip: Visit late May or early September for a sweet spot—cool weather, manageable daylight, fewer crowds, and better prices without sacrificing trail access.

Wildlife is abundant here; keep an eye out for deer, various bird species, and maybe even a sneaky fox or two.

One of the standout trails is the Ukko-Koli Trail. Here’s the lowdown:
  • Length: 6 km
  • Estimated Duration: 2-3 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate
  • Key Features: Panoramic views from the summit, scenic forest paths, and a chance to see the stunning Koli cliffs.
  • Terrain: A mix of forest paths and rocky inclines, with some steep sections.

Another great option is the Paha-Koli Trail:
  • Length: 4 km
  • Estimated Duration: 1.5-2 hours
  • Difficulty Level: Moderate to Challenging
  • Key Features: Dramatic cliffs, unique rock formations, and a quieter experience away from the main tourist areas.
  • Terrain: Steep and rocky in parts, with some sections requiring careful footing.

Getting to Koli National Park is pretty straightforward. You can take a bus from Joensuu, which runs regularly and drops you off close to the park entrance. It can get a bit crowded during peak summer months, so if you prefer a quieter experience, aim for early mornings or weekdays. As for the entrance fee, there’s no charge for accessing the park itself, which is a nice bonus for budget travelers. Just be sure to pack enough snacks and water for your hikes!
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

Koli National Park is a treasure for its breathtaking views from the hilltops, where the landscape stretches endlessly, offering a rare sense of peace. But be prepared: the trails can be steep and challenging, especially if you’re not used to the terrain. It’s not a stroll in the park. Embrace the effort, though; it’s what makes the reward of those panoramic vistas all the more satisfying. Just pace yourself, and you’ll be fine.
