Backpacking in Pyhä-Luosto
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #12
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 21, 2026

Most summaries sell Pyhä-Luosto as “Lapland wilderness,” but the surprise is how quickly you can step from a supermarket or ski hotel into genuinely quiet, old-growth forest and fell-top views in under 30 minutes. The park sits in central Lapland, between the small resort villages of Pyhä and Luosto, about 90 minutes north of Rovaniemi. Trails are well-marked, with day hikes and 2–3 day routes, but scenery is more about rolling fells, gorges, and ancient pines than dramatic peaks. Wildlife is shy; you’ll see tracks more than animals. It’s easy to reach by bus, there’s no entrance fee, and camping is straightforward with free lean-tos and basic huts, though commercial cabins and ski hotels can feel pricey and a bit resort-y. Compared with Oulanka or Urho Kekkonen, Pyhä-Luosto is smaller, more managed, and less wild, but also less logistically stressful for a first Lapland backpack.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Isokuru Gorge — A dramatic, steep-sided gorge where the trail drops into a narrow cleft with sheer rock walls and a surprisingly lush microclimate; it’s great for photos, feels wild without a long walk, and you can often hear cascading water even in dry periods.
  • Lampivaara Amethyst Mine — One of the few places in Europe where you can hunt for amethysts by hand; guided visits explain the geology and you get to try panning and digging, which is a fun, unusual break from ordinary hiking.
  • Ukko-Luosto Summit & Lookout — Short but rewarding climb to a wooden tower with sweeping views over the fells and forests; perfect for sunrise/sunset or to scan for reindeer and the odd arctic bird, and a top spot for Northern Lights in winter.

  • Fell Ridges and Tunturi Tops — Treeless, rolling fell landscapes that give long, open vistas and a classic Lapland feeling; trails range from easy day walks to multi-day routes along ridgelines, with plenty of boardwalks over sensitive tundra.
  • Old Pine Forests and Lichen-Covered Bogs — The contrast of gnarly, ancient pines and open mires is beautiful and quiet; these habitats are great for birdlife (Siberian jays and similar species) and for foraging cloudberries in late summer.
  • Wildlife Watching — Reindeer are common and often roam near trails; keep an eye out for wolverine tracks, grouse, and migratory birds—rare sightings do happen, but mostly it’s subtle, patient wildlife experiences rather than guaranteed close encounters.
  • Northern Lights & Winter Trails — In clear, cold months the dark fells offer excellent aurora views away from light pollution; the park also has marked ski and snowshoe routes if you want to turn the light show into a proper winter backcountry night.
