Backpacking in GR10
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

You have to choose, before you even lace your boots: are you walking the whole GR10 across the Pyrenees, or are you cherry-picking a week or two? That decision matters, because this trail eats time and leg strength. The GR10 runs along the French side of the Pyrenees, from the Atlantic at Hendaye to the Mediterranean near Banyuls-sur-Mer, roughly 900 km of constant up-and-down. It’s gorgeous and punishing: beech forests dripping after a storm, high grassy cols with horses blocking the path, hot rocky traverses where every switchback feels personal. Public transport to the main trailheads is decent by French standards—trains to Hendaye, connections to Cauterets, Luchon, etc.—so you can section-hike without a car. Compared to the Tour du Mont Blanc or GR5, the GR10 feels wilder, less curated, more “work.” That’s the charm and the curse: fewer cappuccinos, more sweat, bigger sense of having actually crossed something.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Hendaye coastline & Col d’Ibardin — The trail actually begins where the sea meets the mountains: wide Atlantic views, rocky headlands and the chance to climb up quickly into green ridgelines with San Sebastián visible across the bay. It’s a rare early taste on a long hike — salt air, coastal cliffs and Basque villages before the real mountains kick in.
  2. Pic du Midi d’Ossau — That twin-summit granite needle is iconic and visible for miles along the GR10. The Ossau Valley offers classic Pyrenean scenery: steep meadows, shepherds’ huts, marmots and chamois. The peak’s sheer silhouette makes for one of the most memorable photo moments on the route.

  3. Cirque de Gavarnie — A UNESCO-scale amphitheatre of cliffs and waterfalls that feels cinematic in person. The scale is what sets it apart: towering walls, the powerful Gavarnie waterfall in summer melt, and easy-access views that still feel wildly alpine compared to most lowland hikes.
  4. Lac des Bouillouses & the Canigou massif — High mountain lakes with mirror reflections, lichen-covered rocks and a very Catalan mountain culture. Sunrise on Canigou is a ritual for many walkers here; the lakes and plateaus are great for wildflower displays, starry nights and cooling dips after a long day.
  5. Banyuls-sur-Mer, Cap Béar & the Mediterranean finish — Ending at the Mediterranean is its own reward: sea cliffs, little Catalan fishing ports, vineyards clinging to terraces and a marine reserve for snorkeling if you’ve still got energy. The contrast between the green western start and this sun-scorched, sea-scented finish is what makes the whole GR10 feel like a journey through different worlds.

  • Seasonal Activities: Summer opens mountain huts and local markets, adding cultural flavor to your trek. Early season might miss some services, while late season sees closures starting mid-September.
  • Price Fluctuations: Peak summer means higher prices for lodging and transport. Booking early can lock in better rates, while shoulder seasons offer savings but fewer amenities.
Pro-tip: Start your hike in late June to catch the trail just as it wakes up—snow mostly gone, huts open, and crowds still thin enough to feel like you own the mountains.
