Backpacking in Grande Plage de Biarritz
👌 Worth visitingbeach ranked #11
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Everyone shows up to Grande Plage de Biarritz expecting some wild, untouched Atlantic paradise; what they actually find is France’s very photogenic beach version of a busy high street. This is Biarritz, in the southwest near the Spanish border, not some secret cove you “discover” after a 20 km hike. For backpackers, I’d call it Overrated but still worth a quick reality-check visit. The sand is clean, the scenery is dramatic, and the surf can be excellent, but crowds and pricey cafés kill the barefoot-budget fantasy fast. Swimming is decent yet often rough, snorkelling is pointless, and cheap beds vanish in high season. For more soul and less scene, I’d escape to Anglet’s beaches or down to Hendaye, where the Atlantic feels less like a catwalk and more like a coastline.

Why Grande Plage de Biarritz should be on your travel list

Grande Plage de Biarritz isn’t just another beach; it’s a backpacker’s haven. First off, the laid-back atmosphere invites you to kick off your shoes and breathe. You’re not just here to swim; it’s a social scene where travelers swap stories over cheap beers. The affordability factor is a game-changer—grab a baguette and some cheese, and you’re set for a picnic without breaking the bank.

But here’s the kicker: Grande Plage de Biarritz serves as a connector along the coastal route. It’s a perfect pause between your next adventure, letting you recharge while soaking in the sun. The water access is a bonus, but it’s the vibe that keeps you lingering. So, whether you’re catching rays or chatting up fellow wanderers, this beach is essential for anyone looking to blend relaxation with the thrill of the journey.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Grande Plage de Biarritz

  • Surf culture and lessons — Grande Plage de Biarritz is basically the birthplace of European surf fever: a busy beach break with consistent Atlantic waves, tons of surf schools and rental shacks nearby, and a spectator culture that’s as much fun as getting wet. Perfect for learning or watching experienced locals carve the shore. (Day)
  • Belle Époque seafront and promenade — the long esplanade backed by ornate 19th-century facades and the grand seaside architecture gives the place a proper old-world seaside feel you won’t find at a plain sandy strip. Stroll it for people-watching, photography and that unique mix of urban chic + ocean wind. (Day & Night)

  • Rocher de la Vierge viewpoint — a dramatic rocky outcrop you can admire from the sand or walk to for panoramic views of the bay; waves pound the rocks here and the perspective makes the whole beach look cinematic. Sunrise, low tide or just before sunset are particularly striking. (Best during the day, spectacular at sunset)
  • Tide-pool hunting and coastal wildlife — head to the rocky edges at low tide and you’ll find real Atlantic life: anemones, small crabs and pools to poke around in. It’s a hands-on, cheap little nature lesson that’s very specific to this coastline’s geology. (Day)
  • Sunset walks and the evening shoreline vibe — after the day crowds shrink, the beach takes on a quieter, almost cinematic mood: surfers still out in silhouette, lights along the promenade, and the sound of big Atlantic rollers. Great for relaxed night walks or meeting fellow travelers without needing a club scene. (Night)

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities - Summer hosts festivals and open-air markets, adding local flavor beyond the beach. Off-season, many spots close or scale back, so your options shrink faster than the tourist crowds.
  • Topic: Price Fluctuations - Peak summer means peak prices—accommodation and food costs spike. Shoulder seasons (May-June, September) offer better deals without sacrificing too much sun or fun.
Pro-tip: Aim for early June or late September to dodge crowds and inflated prices while still catching decent weather—because who wants to pay a premium just to elbow for a spot on the sand?

Then there’s the old town, a short stroll from the beach. It’s a maze of narrow streets filled with quirky cafés and local shops. Staying here means you can soak up the history while still being close enough to the waves. Plus, the vibe is relaxed, making it easy to strike up conversations with other wanderers.

Avoid the outskirts unless you’re keen on a long trek to the beach. They might promise tranquility, but you’ll miss the pulse of the action. Stick to the lively spots, and you’ll find the soul of Grande Plage de Biarritz waiting for you.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

Grande Plage de Biarritz is generally a safe haven for beachgoers, but a few realities keep it grounded. The waves can pack a punch, especially during high tide, so keep an eye on the surf. Locals tend to swim where the flags are green, so follow their lead. Currents can sneak up on you, but they’re manageable if you stay aware.

As for marine life, jellyfish occasionally drift in, but they’re not the stuff of nightmares. Just watch where you step—those rays like to bury themselves in the sand.

Weather shifts can be dramatic; the sun can go from friendly to fierce in a heartbeat, so slather on that sunscreen. And don’t leave your stuff unattended; beach thieves are as real as the tides. Enjoy the sun, but keep your wits about you!

We 💚 feedbackWhat to keep in mind

Grande Plage de Biarritz is a sun-soaked slice of paradise where the waves crash like they’re auditioning for a movie. You’ll love the vibrant beach culture and the chance to sip a café au lait while people-watching. But brace yourself for the crowds; it can feel like a sardine can during peak season. Still, if you can find a spot to breathe, it’s worth every sandy second.
