Backpacking in Lagodekhi Nature Reserve Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people only realize on day two that Lagodekhi’s biggest advantage is water: real, flowing, everywhere. You can refill from streams, dunk your head, and carry less weight than on almost any other serious trail in Georgia. Lagodekhi Nature Reserve sits in the far eastern corner of the country, right up against the Azerbaijani border, where the lush foothills of the Greater Caucasus start to rise. The classic Lagodekhi trails are long, steep hauls through dense forest to big-payoff views over high lakes and wide valleys; expect real elevation gain, mud, and sometimes leeches, not a casual stroll. Public transport drops you in Lagodekhi town, and from there it’s a short walk or cheap taxi to the park gate, which makes it far more accessible than Tusheti or Svaneti. Compared to those rock-and-glacier showpieces, Lagodekhi feels wilder, wetter, and more enclosed—less postcard, more jungle grind with a summit-style reward.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  1. Primeval Colchic forest — Old-growth beech, oak and yew trees that feel ancient the moment you step under the canopy. This is one of the best places in the Caucasus to see lush, layered forest (mossy trunks, giant lungworts, tree ferns) that most other European trails don’t have — great for shade, mushrooms in season, and photographing light through the leaves.
  2. Main waterfall and cascades — A short, well-built trail leads to a dramatic waterfall with viewpoints and wet spray that cools you off on hot days. The succession of smaller cascades upstream makes the whole river corridor scenic; it’s an easy reward if you want a high-impact sight without a full-day scramble.

  3. Gorge rivers and hanging bridges — The trail follows narrow gorges where the river cuts through dark granite, with wooden crossings and viewpoints. Those intimate canyon sections contrast nicely with the open ridges — you get both green, close-in river scenery and wider mountain frames on one hike.
  4. Alpine meadows and panoramic ridgelines — Above the treeline you hit wide, flower-splashed meadows and sweeping views of the Greater Caucasus. It’s where you feel how high you are — endless sky, grazing flocks, and clear sight-lines into neighboring valleys. Personal favorite: I love sitting on one of these ridges with a thermos and nowhere to be.
  5. Wildlife and birding opportunities — Because the reserve is protected you have decent chances to spot chamois/bezoar-type goats on steep slopes, hear woodpeckers in the forest, and see raptors circling above. Tracks and signs are common; carry binoculars and go slow at dawn or dusk for the best encounters.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees spike in summer. Visiting in spring or autumn often means better deals and more flexible bookings.

Pro-tip: Aim for late September to early October—cool air, fewer people, and the forest’s colors will make every step feel like a reward.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Lagodekhi Nature Reserve Trail is a feast for the senses, but it demands respect. Weather can shift quickly; sunny mornings can morph into rain-soaked afternoons. Dress in layers and pack a reliable rain jacket. The terrain varies from well-trodden paths to steep, rocky sections that require careful footing. Navigation is straightforward, but keep an eye on trail markers, especially in fog.

Wildlife is part of the experience—bears and wolves roam these woods, but sightings are rare. If you do encounter wildlife, maintain distance and don’t feed them.

Timing is key; early mornings offer cooler temps and fewer crowds. Bring sturdy boots and trekking poles for stability. Hydrate often, especially on the uphill stretches. Embrace the challenge, and the breathtaking views at the summit will make every step worthwhile.
