Backpacking in Tbilisi Trail
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 4, 2026

Most blogs sell Tbilisi National Park Trail as a gentle city-escape stroll; in reality, big chunks feel like a proper mountain approach, with loose dirt, steep pitches, and almost no shade in summer. The trail sits just north of Tbilisi, on the ridge above the city, inside Georgia’s first national park. You can rattle up by metro and marshrutka in under an hour, then walk a 12-18 km loop depending on variants—moderate on paper, but the heat and climbs push it toward “solid workout.” Forest, open ridges, and long views toward the Caucasus keep you moving, but there are road sections and some scrappy, littered stretches. Compared with Kazbegi or Borjomi, it’s less dramatic, more raw, and way more “after-work local” than “bucket-list alpine.”

Best time to go: April - June, September - November

✨ Why go?
Ranked #99 hike in Georgia
What makes it a must-see hike

Tbilisi National Park Trail is a backpacker’s playground. Just a short ride from the city, you can hop on a bus or marshrutka, and in no time, you’re trading urban chaos for crisp mountain air. The scenery-to-effort ratio here is off the charts. You’ll find trails that wind through lush forests, with views that stretch over the city and beyond.

The beauty? You can choose your distance. Whether you want a quick jaunt or a full-day trek, it’s all there. Plus, it won’t break the bank. A few lari for transport and you’re set.

This hike fits seamlessly into a longer backpacking route, making it easy to explore more of Georgia’s stunning landscapes. The burn in your legs is worth it when you reach a viewpoint and take in the sprawling vistas. And let’s not forget that first cold beer back in … read more 👉

This hike fits seamlessly into a longer backpacking route, making it easy to explore more of Georgia’s stunning landscapes. The burn in your legs is worth it when you reach a viewpoint and take in the sprawling vistas. And let’s not forget that first cold beer back in Tbilisi—it’s the perfect reward after a day on the trails.

💡 HighlightsThe experiences that define the visit

  • Panoramic view from Kojori ridge — Close enough to Tbilisi that one minute you’re in traffic, the next you’re above the rooftops looking at the whole city curled along the Mtkvari. On clear days the skyline, the river bend and the distant Greater Caucasus create a layered, “city-meets-mountains” panorama you won’t get on most suburban hikes.
  • Betania Monastery — A small, quiet medieval church tucked into a steep, green gorge; its simple stone architecture and faded frescoes feel intimate compared with the big tourist sites in town. The monastery gives the trail a cultural heartbeat—perfect for a slow pause, photos, or a moment of calm away from the crowds.

  • Kojori fortress ruins and watchtowers — Crumbling stone walls and towers sit on the ridge as a tangible reminder of the area’s medieval past. They’re great for light scrambling, skyline shots and imagining the old defensive line that once watched over the valley below.
  • Oak-beech woodland and wildlife — The park’s surprisingly dense mixed forest feels properly wild for being so near the capital: old oaks, mossy trunks and a chorus of birds. Keep your eyes peeled for small mammals, woodpeckers and raptors—wildlife sightings are common enough to make the hike feel like real nature time, not just a city walk.
  • Open meadows and pastoral scenery on the plateau — Between the ridges you hit wide grassy plateaus where wildflowers, seasonal grazing and tiny shepherd huts show the rural side of Georgia. These sunny stretches are great for stretching, a picnic, and tasting local cheese if a shepherd happens by—big, simple vistas that contrast nicely with the forest sections.
Personal favorite: Betania Monastery — I love the quiet, the rock-hugged setting and the sense of stepping out of the city into something much older.
