Backpacking in Abastumani
🌟 Highlightvillage ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 6, 2026

Most people only realize on the bus out that Abastumani is where they should’ve paused to breathe properly. It’s a small spa village in southern Georgia, in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region, tucked in the hills between Akhaltsikhe and the road toward Batumi. Georgia is already a backpacker favorite for cheap food, wild mountains, and easy hitchhiking, but it can feel rushed and boozy along the main Tbilisi-Kazbegi-Batumi loop. Abastumani slows everything down. Pine-scented air, cool evenings, the old observatory on the ridge, mineral baths that feel more Soviet sanatorium than luxury spa. Evenings are quiet: families strolling, a couple of guesthouses where dinner turns into long, slow conversations, but not much of a party scene and sometimes no other foreigners at all. Compared with Borjomi or Bakuriani, Abastumani is smaller, calmer, and more lived-in than touristic.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #6 village in Georgia
Why Abastumani should be on your travel list

Abastumani is a breath of fresh air on the backpacking route through Georgia. Nestled in the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus, it offers a slower pace that contrasts sharply with busier spots. The crisp mountain air carries the scent of pine, inviting you to linger. Hikers will appreciate the proximity to trails leading to stunning vistas, while the nearby hot springs provide a perfect way to unwind after a day on foot. The village has a local character that feels genuine; you might find yourself sharing stories with friendly locals over a cup of strong coffee. It’s ideal for solo travelers or couples seeking calm, though many backpackers tend to stop briefly before moving on. If you crave a moment of peace amid your adventures, Abastumani is worth the pause.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  1. Abastumani Astronomical Observatory — A proper old observatory perched above the village with working telescopes and simple exhibitions; book ahead for a walkthrough and you’ll get a sense of why Soviet and Georgian astronomers loved this dark, high spot.
  2. Abastumani Sanatorium & Thermal Baths — The mineral/sulphur springs are the town’s reason for being; the bathing complexes and the surrounding Soviet-era sanatorium architecture are fascinating to poke around even if you just soak and listen to the mountain air.
  3. Abastumani Palace (the Duke’s/19th-century summer residence) — A graceful, partly restored palace complex that reflects the 19th-century resort life when Russian nobles and Georgian elite came here; good for photos and imagining the old spa-town glamour.
  4. Abastumani Botanical

  4. Abastumani Botanical Garden — A surprisingly rich hillside garden that showcases sub-alpine and regional plantings; it’s peaceful, informative, and great for a short, fragrant wander when you want a break from stone buildings and vistas.
  5. St. George Church (village church) — A compact, characterful Georgian Orthodox church that anchors local life; visiting during a service or chatting with the caretakers gives real, on-the-ground cultural context.
  6. Soviet-era villa street & promenade — Not a single monument, but the line of wooden villas, guesthouses and promenades tells the human story of Abastumani’s heyday; it’s where you’ll meet locals, see old signage, and get the town’s atmosphere.
  7. Small local museum / ethnographic displays — Tiny museums here hold textiles, photos and objects from spa-town life and local crafts; the exhibits are modest but they make the town’s history tangible and often come with a chatty curator.
  8. Panoramic viewpoint above the village — A short walk up from the center gets you sweeping views of the Otskhe valley, surrounding ridges and the town’s roofscape; ideal at sunset or for picking out trails you might hike next.
  9. Trailheads to nearby alpine meadows — Abastumani is the practical jumping-off point for short hikes into the Meskheti foothills; the trails are immediate, walkable from town, and reward you with wildflowers and quiet pastures.
  10. Riverside picnic spots along the Otskhe — Simple, low-key places where locals picnic and kids splash in summer; visiting gives a genuine slice of daily life and is an easy, pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
For day trips outside Abastumani, head to Akhaltsikhe’s Rabati Castle, the Khertvisi Fortress, or the spectacular Vardzia cave monastery — Vardzia is my personal favorite.

Why choose a guesthouse? Because the real magic of Abastumani is in the slow mornings and the stories shared over homemade khachapuri and fresh mountain tea. Places like Guesthouse Nino or Abastumani Guesthouse offer simple rooms with heating—essential when the mountain chill sets in after sunset—and a chance to connect with hosts who know the best trails and secret viewpoints.

Booking here means you’re not just a visitor; you’re part of the rhythm. The village’s small size means walking everywhere is easy, and staying local means you avoid the tourist traps that can dull the experience. The payoff? Waking up to a sky so clear it feels like you can reach out and touch the stars.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

Abastumani’s thermal springs are a game-changer after a long trek. Picture soaking in warm, mineral-rich waters while the mountain air wraps around you—pure bliss. But be ready for limited amenities; it’s not a bustling hub. Embrace the simplicity, and you’ll find the charm in its quietude. It’s a trade-off that makes the experience feel authentic.
