Backpacking in Gudauri
👍 Recommendedvillage ranked #8
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 6, 2026

Ten years ago Gudauri was a sleepy ski stop: a few lifts, Soviet concrete, one shop with stale bread and strong cheese. Today it’s a full-blown resort, cranes on the skyline, rental boards stacked outside glossy hotels, yet the same thin mountain air and long Caucasus ridgelines still frame everything. You’re in northern Georgia, high on the Georgian Military Highway, between Tbilisi and the Russian border. For backpackers, Georgia is cheap, generous, and chaotic in a good way; it’s also rough around the edges, with erratic transport and infrastructure that can feel half-finished. People pause in Gudauri for snow and big views, or pass straight through chasing Kazbegi’s drama and village feel. Evenings are quiet, more hotel buffet than homestay feast, and it’s easier to meet other travelers in hostels down the road than in Gudauri’s scattered, ski-focused lodgings.

💡 HighlightsPlaces and moments you shouldn't skip

  • Gudauri Ski Area (main slopes) — The obvious one: lift-served alpine terrain from gentle beginner slopes to long runs and serious off-piste lines. Even if you don’t ski, the energy of the resort and the ridge views are why people come.
  • Main Gondola and Lift Stations — Riding the main gondola is the easiest way to get from the village up into the high plateaus; the top stations are also great, accessible viewpoints for photos and short walks without needing skis.
  • Gudauri Snowpark (freestyle area) — A compact, shaped park with jumps and rails that draws locals and visiting riders; good for watching free-style talent and for trying something different from piste skiing.

  • Tandem Paragliding Launches — Paragliding is a signature Gudauri experience: tandem flights launch from the ridge and float you over the Aragvi valley. It’s a short, adrenaline-tinged activity with unforgettable panoramas.
  • Backcountry / Heli-ski Operator Bases — Several local guiding offices operate right in the village; even if you’re not booking heli-skiing, stopping in to talk to guides gives you a real sense of the mountain culture and safety realities of freeriding here.
  • Georgian Military Highway Scenic Overlooks — The stretch of highway through Gudauri has several purposefully parked viewpoints where you can step out, stretch your legs, and drink in sweeping Caucasus vistas — perfect for short photo hikes and sunset watches.
  • Georgia-Russia Friendship Monument (Jvari Monument) — That distinctive circular Soviet monument above the highway is a classic photo stop: it’s easy to reach from the village, provides dramatic panoramas, and speaks to the region’s recent history and changing politics.
  • Mountain Cafés and Top-Station Terraces — Small but lively: cafés at lift stations and ridge terraces are social hubs where skiers, guides, and drivers mingle—great for hot food, strong coffee, local chatter, and people-watching with a view.
  • Local Guesthouses and Supra Evenings — Staying in a Gudauri guesthouse and being invited to a supra (family-style feast) is one of the most authentic ways to meet locals and taste home cooking, Georgian wine, and real hospitality outside the resort bubble.
  • Short Ridge Walks and Easy Trailheads — There are accessible footpaths from the village that lead to nearby ridgelines and viewpoints; these give a quick, non-technical taste of the high country without needing a full day or special gear.
A few excellent day trips outside Gudauri are Stepantsminda (and the Gergeti Trinity Church) — my personal favorite — plus Ananuri Fortress/Jinvali Reservoir and the Truso Valley, all easily visited from Gudauri in a day.

Gudauri’s charm isn’t just in its slopes but in how the village feels when you’re off the beaten path, boots dusted with snow or mud. Why guesthouses? They’re run by locals who know the mountain’s moods and can tip you off to the best ski runs or hidden hiking trails before the crowds arrive. Places like Gudauri Hostel or Snow Leopard Guesthouse offer dorm beds that keep your budget intact but don’t skimp on warmth or atmosphere. You’ll find yourself swapping stories over a shared breakfast of khachapuri and strong Georgian coffee, the kind that wakes you up faster than the mountain chill.

Choosing these spots means you avoid the sterile hotel vibe and instead get a pulse on the village’s rhythm. Plus, they’re often a short walk from the ski lifts, so you’re not wasting precious daylight trekking with heavy gear. Staying here turns your trip into more than just a ski stop—it becomes a lived-in experience, where every creak of the wooden floor and every morning’s light through frost-speckled windows feels earned.
