Backpacking in Lake Bosomtwe Trail
👌 Worth visitinghike ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 31, 2026

You have to decide: do you circle the entire lake, pushing through the humid, red-dirt villages and the relentless Ghanaian sun, or do you stick to the easier northern arc, where the trail hugs the water and the hills rise gently behind you? That choice matters—your legs will remind you for days. Lake Bosomtwe Trail sits in the Ashanti region, about an hour south of Kumasi, and it’s Ghana’s only natural lake, formed in a meteorite crater. The hike itself is a sweaty, sensory punch: kids wave from fishing canoes, goats scatter, and the air smells like woodsmoke and mango. The full loop is around 35 kilometers—long, hot, and occasionally confusing, with patchy signage and the odd motorbike shortcut tempting you. Public transport drops you at Abono, but don’t expect a smooth handoff; you’ll walk the last stretch. Compared to the lush, shaded trails of Kakum or the breezy Volta hills, Bosomtwe is rawer, more exposed, but the payoff—standing waist-deep in the crater lake, sweat cooling, surrounded by green ridges—is pure, earned satisfaction.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  1. Crater-rim viewpoints — Hike up to the rim for the classic, jaw-dropping view: a nearly perfect circular lake sitting like a blue bowl in the landscape. The geology is what makes it special here — it’s a meteorite-formed lake, so the symmetry and the surrounding forested rim feel different from ordinary valley lakes. Sunrise or sunset here is cinematic; bring a light windbreaker and a camera that can handle glow.
  2. Shoreline villages and fishing life — The trail threads past small lakeside communities where traditional canoe fishing and fish-smoking are still everyday work. It’s low-key, authentic interaction: watch nets hauled in, buy fresh tilapia, or sit on a log and chat with fishermen about the lake. These encounters give the hike a cultural heartbeat that most purely “scenic” trails don’t have.
  3. Sacred shrines and local customs — Bosomtwe is treated as a sacred place by nearby Akan/Ashanti communities, and you’ll see shrines and hear stories tied to the lake’s spiritual role. It’s a rare mix of natural beauty and living tradition, so be respectful, ask before photographing people or rituals, and you’ll often get richer, more meaningful encounters than you would on a purely tourist route.
  4. Birding and riverside wildlife — The lake’s edge and the rim forest are surprisingly lively for birdwatching: kingfishers, herons, and other waterbirds are common, and forest patches harbor small primates and lots of butterflies. For photographers and wildlife fans on a budget hike, the variety within a compact area is a real plus.
  5. Magic sunsets and mirror reflections — The light over Bosomtwe tends to be dramatic: calm evenings give you glassy reflections of the rim and palms, while cloud-filled skies add texture. Stay until twilight (or take a short canoe trip) and you’ll see why many hikers call the sunset here the highlight — it’s simple, but unforgettable.

  • Crowds: The trail sees fewer visitors during the rainy months, but the dry season attracts local hikers and weekend warriors. Midweek hikes offer more solitude if you want to dodge the buzz.

  • Seasonal Activities: Dry season coincides with local festivals and fishing activities around the lake, adding cultural flavor to your trek. Wet season limits these experiences due to accessibility issues.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and guide fees spike slightly in the dry season when demand peaks. Booking ahead can lock in better rates and secure your spot.

Pro-tip: Start your hike early in the dry season to catch the lake’s glassy surface at dawn—nothing beats that first light reflecting off the water after a cool, sweat-free climb.

Estimated Duration: Plan on spending around 6 to 8 hours to complete the hike, depending on your pace and how often you stop to take in the views or snap some photos.

Difficulty Level: This trail is generally rated as moderate. You’ll encounter some steep sections and uneven terrain, but nothing too extreme if you’re used to hiking.

Starting Point: The trail kicks off from the small village of Abono. To get there via public transport, hop on a trotro from Kumasi to Abono. The ride takes about an hour, and once you’re in Abono, you can easily find the trailhead near the lakeshore.

Major Landmarks Along the Route:
  • Lake Bosomtwe: The centerpiece of your hike, this crater lake is surrounded by lush hills and is perfect for a refreshing dip.
  • Local Villages: You’ll pass through several small villages where you can interact with friendly locals and maybe grab a snack.
  • Scenic Overlooks: There are a few spots along the trail that offer breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding landscape—definitely worth a pause.

Type of Terrain and Scenery: Expect a mix of well-trodden paths and some rocky spots. The scenery is a feast for the eyes, with the lake shimmering in the sun, surrounded by rolling hills and dense forests. The trail can be a bit muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are a must.

Typical Vegetation and Wildlife:
  • Vegetation: You’ll find a mix of tropical trees, shrubs, and grasses. The area is rich in biodiversity, so keep an eye out for various plant species.
  • Wildlife: While you might not see big game, look out for colorful birds, butterflies, and maybe even some monkeys in the trees if you’re lucky.

This trail offers a great blend of adventure, culture, and natural beauty, making it a perfect choice for independent hikers looking to explore Ghana’s stunning landscapes.
⚠️ Hiking info can sometimes be outdated or inaccurate. Before you hit the trail, check the latest conditions with locals. If you do spot anything that's off, I'd love to hear from you, so I can update it for fellow travelers.

🛡️ SafetyStaying Safe: What Travelers Should Know

The Lake Bosomtwe Trail is a rewarding trek, but it demands respect. The weather can shift quickly; mornings might start cool, but by midday, the sun can blaze. Dress in layers and carry a rain jacket just in case.

The terrain is mostly manageable, with some steep sections that require careful footing. Pay attention to your path—roots and rocks can trip you up. Navigation is straightforward, but a map or GPS can be your best friend if you stray.

Wildlife encounters are rare, but if you spot a monkey or a colorful bird, keep your distance. They’re part of the ecosystem, not your selfie backdrop.

Timing is key; start early to avoid the heat and enjoy the tranquility. With the right preparation, you’ll savor that first cold beer by the lake, knowing you’ve earned it.

We 💚 feedbackIs it worth it?

The Lake Bosomtwe Trail is a pulse of life, where the vibrant local culture meets stunning lakeside views. You’ll feel the rhythm of the land in every step, and that first sip of cold Star beer at the end? Pure bliss. But be ready for the humidity—it can be relentless. Embrace the sweat; it’s part of the experience. The reward is worth the effort, but don’t underestimate the heat.
