Ada Foah is not a place where you swim off a calm lagoon beach, which is what many travelers assume from the photos. The real draw is the Volta estuary, where the river meets the Atlantic. It sits about 120 km (75 miles) east of Accra, in the Greater Accra Region. The ocean side has a strong shore break and a steep, coarse sand beach with little shade. The sandbar is wide, clean in patches, and littered with driftwood and fishing debris in others. I arrived by boat at dusk, salt on my lips, and ate grilled tilapia with pepper sauce and kenkey while the sky turned the color of ripe mango. It is quieter than Labadi and far less polished than Kokrobite. Must do: the boat trip to the sandbar and the river lodges. Overrated: expecting surf lessons or reef snorkeling. Food and rooms are cheap, though transport takes patience.

I would pick the estuary boat trip first. It gets you to the sandbar, shows you the place where river and ocean meet, and explains the geography and local livelihoods better than any other single activity. Book ahead at festival times and over holidays, bring cash since ATMs are limited, and pack a mosquito repellent.

🛡️ SafetySafety Tips and Common Scams in Ada Foah Beach

Ada Foah is generally relaxed and safe, with the main risks coming from the sea rather than people. The ocean side has strong rip currents, a steep shore and heavy shore-break waves, so most locals and lodge staff advise against swimming there. Wade, paddle and enjoy the view instead. The river side is far calmer, though tides and boat traffic can create currents near the mouth, so stay close to the lodge areas. The sun is intense, especially from March to May, and there is little natural shade on the sandbar, so bring a hat, reef-safe sunscreen and plenty of water. Mosquitoes come out at dusk. Theft is uncommon, but keep valuables in your lodge and do not leave bags unattended on the sand. Agree boat prices and life jackets before departing, and avoid crossing at dusk without a lamp or a trusted operator.

Most travelers reach Ada Foah from Accra by trotro or shared taxi, which takes about 2.5 to 3.5 hours depending on traffic. Take a trotro from Tema Station or Accra’s Circle area toward Ada (Big Ada), then a short taxi or minibus onward to Ada Foah. Fares are usually in the range of GH¢40 to 80. A private car or ride-hailing driver from Accra costs more but cuts the trip to around 2 hours outside rush hour.
Swimming is good in the calm Volta River estuary but poor on the ocean side, where strong currents and a steep shore break make it risky. Surfing is not a real option here, with Busua and Kokrobite far better choices. Snorkeling is not recommended, as the river is murky and the ocean has no reef. Kayaking and paddleboarding are the best water activities, with rentals typically costing GH¢50 to 150 per hour or trip.
Entry to the beach and sandbar is free, and there is no official gate fee. You will pay for boat crossings to the ocean side, usually GH¢30 to 100 per person depending on distance and group size, and some lodges charge day-use fees if you use their facilities. Camping or a basic room typically runs GH¢100 to 400 a night. Bring cash, since card machines and ATMs are limited in town.

Ada Foah is worth the trip for the moment the river meets the sea, best seen from a small boat at sunset with grilled fish waiting on the other side. The drawback is that the ocean is too rough for proper swimming, and getting here by trotro takes patience. Come for the estuary, not for the surf.
