Backpacking in Busua Beach
🏆 Top pickbeach ranked #2
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated June 4, 2026

Let’s clear something up: Busua Beach is not the untouched paradise Instagram wants you to believe. It’s in Ghana’s Western Region, a few hours’ lurch west of Accra, and yes, you’ll see more than one backpacker in elephant pants clutching a coconut. Busua is the kind of place where you can actually swim without fearing for your life (unlike some of Ghana’s rougher Atlantic stretches), and the surf is beginner-friendly—think more “gentle nudge” than “wipeout reel.” The sand is clean-ish by West African standards, but don’t expect Seychelles-level sparkle; plastic flotsam is a recurring guest star. The vibe is laid-back, sometimes to the point of inertia, and you’ll find cheap grilled fish and cold Club beer within flip-flop distance. Accommodation ranges from “barely standing” to “charmingly ramshackle.” Compared to the party chaos of Kokrobite or the isolation of Cape Three Points, Busua strikes a rare balance: social but not suffocating, accessible but not overrun.

✨ Why go?
Ranked #2 beach in Ghana
Why visitors keep coming back

Busua Beach in Ghana is one of those places that backpackers stumble upon and then refuse to leave. Why? Let’s break it down.

First off, the laid-back atmosphere is like a warm hug after a long trek. You can kick off your shoes, sink your toes into the sand, and breathe. It’s not just about the water access—though the gentle waves are perfect for a dip or a lazy float. It’s about the vibe.

Then there’s the affordability. You can grab a cold drink for less than the price of a bus ticket. Seriously, your wallet will thank you. Plus, the social scene is buzzing with fellow travelers and locals alike. You’ll find yourself swapping stories over a beach bonfire, laughing at the absurdity of life on the road.

  • Surf the mellow Atlantic breaks — Busua is one of Ghana’s most reliable surf spots: long, sandy takeoffs and forgiving, peeling waves make it excellent for beginners and comfy for intermediates. Fewer crowds than the big-name breaks means more waves and a proper surf-town vibe without the fuss.
  • Watch the canoe landings and buy fresh catch — Early morning is fish-market theatre: wooden canoes coming ashore, fresh catch being sorted and sold right on the sand. It’s a raw, local slice of coastal life and you can often have your fish grilled or smoked minutes after purchase.
  • Explore the tidal rock pools and coastal outcrops — At low tide the rocky points reveal shallow pools packed with small marine life and dramatic rock formations to scramble over. It’s better than a generic stretch of sand—good

  • Sunset from the long west-facing sandbank — Busua’s wide, uninterrupted shoreline gives spectacular Atlantic sunsets; the light on the sand and rocks is fantastic for photos, and you’ll sometimes spot dolphins or fishing canoes silhouetted on the horizon.
  • Moonlit bonfires, drumming and laid-back night gatherings — There’s no thumping nightclub scene here, but nights bring small bonfires, impromptu drumming, and moonlit walks or surf sessions. It’s low-key and social—perfect if you want local culture without a tourist trap.

  • Topic: Crowds – Peak tourist season aligns with the dry months, so expect more visitors from December to February. If you prefer your beach with fewer selfie sticks, aim for the shoulder months like November or March.

  • Topic: Seasonal Activities – The dry season hosts local festivals and fishing activities, adding cultural spice to your beach days. The rainy season slows things down, so fewer events but more solitude.

  • Topic: Price Fluctuations – Accommodation and flights spike during the dry season, especially around Christmas and New Year. Booking early or going off-peak can save you a chunk of your travel budget.

Pro-tip: Hit Busua Beach in late November or early March to dodge the crowds and rain while still catching the tail end of festival vibes and decent prices.

Just a short stroll from the shoreline, you’ll discover local eateries serving up fresh fish and jollof rice that’ll make your taste buds dance. The evenings? They’re a blast. Grab a cold drink and join the bonfire crowd.

Now, if you venture a bit further from the beach, you might stumble upon some quieter spots. These areas offer a more local experience, but don’t expect the same social buzz. They’re perfect for those who want to recharge after a day of sun and surf.

In short, stick close to the beach for a lively atmosphere, or wander a bit for a more tranquil retreat. Either way, you’ll find your groove.

Busua Beach is a laid-back paradise, but like any good adventure, it comes with its quirks. The swimming conditions here are generally friendly, with moderate waves that invite you in rather than scare you off. Just keep an eye on the tides; they can shift, and the currents might surprise you if you wander too far.

Locals know the best spots, so watch where they dive in. They’re your best guide to the safest areas. As for marine life, you’re unlikely to encounter anything too alarming—no great whites lurking here, just the occasional curious ray.

We 💚 feedbackFinal thoughts on visiting Busua Beach

Busua Beach is a slice of paradise where the waves crash with a rhythm that makes you forget your phone exists. The local vibe is infectious, and the fresh seafood? Worth every penny. But let’s be real: the roads leading here can feel like a rollercoaster designed by someone who hates smooth rides. Prepare for some bumps, both literal and figurative. Embrace the chaos; it’s part of the adventure.

✈️ When did I visit Ghana?
Ghana I visited in December 2024, starting in Accra following the coast, then up north to Mole National park to finish in the Volta Region.
