Everyone shows up to Koukounaries Beach expecting some untouched castaway cove; it’s not that. It’s Greece’s idea of an organized beach theme park, just with better water and pine trees. You’ll find it on the southwest coast of Skiathos, in the Sporades, easy to reach by bus, taxi, or sheer determination with a backpack and mild sunburn.

For backpackers, it’s a trade: the water is glassy-clear, shallow, and perfect for lazy swims, but the sand is lined with sunbeds, bars, and families who brought half their living room. It’s clean, well-kept, and safe, yet crowded in high season and not exactly wild or bohemian. Don’t come for surf or serious snorkeling; come for easy access, cheap-ish gyros just behind the trees, and budget rooms a short walk away. Compared to quieter Greek beaches like Agia Eleni or parts of Pelion, Koukounaries is less magic, more convenience.
