Backpacking in Tzoumerka
👌 Worth visitingnational park ranked #13
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Most online blurbs sell Tzoumerka as “remote and untouched,” but the surprise is how many of its best trails start practically at village doorsteps, not at the end of brutal 4x4 approaches. Tzoumerka National Park sits in the Pindus range of northwestern Greece, between Ioannina and Arta, and it’s one of the country’s rawer backpacking zones. You get steep, serious hiking, big limestone walls, deep gorges, and real chances of spotting chamois and birds of prey, but also slow buses, winter road closures, and trail markings that fade exactly when the terrain gets interesting. No entrance fee, light crowds even in summer, and a mix of stone-guesthouses and a few basic camp spots keep costs sane. Compared with Vikos–Aoös or Pindus NP, Tzoumerka feels wilder, less polished, and more “you’d better know what you’re doing” than “family-friendly alpine stroll.”

  • Kakarditsa Peak — the highest summit in the Tzoumerka (about 2,429 m). Big, raw views in every direction; a proper mountain day with alpine ridges, rock and scree, and one of the best panoramas for sunrise/sunset if you don’t mind the climb.
  • Arachthos Gorge & River — a dramatic canyon cut by the Arachthos River with sheer walls, turquoise pools and pebbled beaches. Great for short cliffside walks, photography, and water activities (rafting/kayak opportunities downstream).
  • Plaka Stone Bridge — the iconic single-arch stone bridge over the Arachthos. Beautifully photogenic, historically important and a nice meeting point for short walks along the riverbanks; you can still feel the old-caravan era engineering underfoot.

  • Syrrako and Kalarrytes (traditional mountain villages) — perfectly preserved stone houses, narrow alleys and wooden balconies. These villages are where local mountain life and history are obvious: folk architecture, small cafes, a relaxed rhythm and stunning valley views right outside the front doors.
  • Old mule tracks and kalderimia — the network of stone-paved paths that once connected villages. These trails are the best way to experience the park: varied terrain, shaded beech sections, steep switchbacks and real solitude away from roads.
  • Beech and fir forests with alpine meadows — dense woodlands that open into flower-strewn high meadows in spring and early summer. The contrast between cool, mossy forest and wide sunlit plateaus makes for superb day-hikes and picnics.
  • Wildlife and birdwatching spots — the park supports raptors, woodland birds and typical mountain mammals; you’ll spot buzzards or kestrels, hear woodpeckers, and encounter signs of foxes and wild boar if you’re quiet and patient. Dawn and dusk are the best times.
Personal favorite: the old mule tracks between Syrrako and Kalarrytes — you get the landscape, the villages, and the kind of slow hiking that really lets the place sink in.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring blooms and autumn foliage add color and texture to hikes. Winter offers snowshoeing but demands experience and gear. Summer is best for river crossings and alpine meadows but expect heat and insects.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and transport costs rise sharply in summer. Booking in shoulder seasons can save 20-30%, freeing budget for gear upgrades or local experiences.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—temperatures are comfortable, trails are quiet, and you avoid the peak-season price surge, preserving your energy and wallet for the parts of Tzoumerka that truly reward effort.
