Backpacking in Vikos-Aoos
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 15, 2026

Most people who’ve only seen a few photos think Vikos-Aoos is just “that one big gorge viewpoint.” It isn’t. It’s an entire highland system in the Pindus range of Epirus, in northwestern Greece, right up near the Albanian border, and it behaves more like a compact mountain region than a single attraction. For backpackers, that’s both the draw and the catch. The hiking is serious: steep stone mule paths between Zagori villages, long traverses along the Vikos Gorge, and wilder routes toward the Aoos river and Tymfi plateau, with real chances of spotting chamois and birds of prey. Scenery is harsh and dramatic rather than postcard-pretty, and the vibe in the villages is quiet, almost sleepy. Access without a car is awkward, but there are no entrance fees, crowds are light outside August, and you can still find basic guesthouses instead of campgrounds. Compared with Olympus or Pindus National Park (Valia Kalda), Vikos-Aoos feels less organized, less busy, and more “you’re on your own” in a good way—if you come prepared.

💡 HighlightsWhat this place is best known for

  • Vikos Gorge (Beloi/Oxia viewpoints) — A limestone canyon with sheer walls that drop for hundreds of metres; from Beloi or the Oxia ledge you get jaw-dropping panoramas that explain why people come here for the views alone. Perfect for dramatic photos and short, steep walks down to the rim.
  • Voidomatis River & springs — Exceptionally clear, icy-blue water that comes straight out of karst springs; ideal for kayaking, a chilly swim on a hot day, or a lazy raft trip. The river corridor is quiet, green and immediately soothing—bring a waterproof camera.
  • Tymfi massif & Drakolimni (Dragon Lake) — High-alpine scenery, rocky ridgelines and a mirror-like glacial lake that sits above tree line. The hike up from Papigo via the Astraka refuge is tough but honest; wildflowers, chamois and expansive views

The hike up from Papigo via the Astraka refuge is tough but honest; wildflowers, chamois and expansive views make it worth every step. Personal favorite: the lake at dawn—otherworldly and almost empty of people.
  • Zagori villages & stone bridges — Little stone villages like Papigo and Monodendri with classic slate roofs, cobbled kalderimia (old footpaths) and dozens of Ottoman-era arched bridges. Charming, easy to explore, and a nice change of pace after long hikes.
  • Aoos Gorge & Konitsa Bridge — Rugged, wilder feel than Vikos in places; the Aoos cuts through dramatic rock and the old Konitsa stone bridge makes a great photo subject and a good base for riverside walks or more technical canyoning if you’re set up for it.
  • Wildlife & alpine flora — Look for chamois on the crags, raptors (golden eagles and vultures circle the thermals), plus a surprising variety of orchids and mountain herbs. Spring and early summer are best for blooms; dawn and dusk are best for animals.
  • Hiking network and kalderimia trails — A patchwork of daytrips and multi-day routes that link gorges, peaks and villages. Trails range from easy riverside strolls to steep alpine scrambles; most are well-trodden but bring a map, good boots and layers—the weather can flip fast up high.

  • Seasonal Activities: Spring blooms and autumn foliage add color and texture to the landscape, enhancing the experience. Summer is best for river activities in Aoos Gorge but expect heat. Winter offers solitude but limited access.

Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—weather is kind, crowds thin, and prices reasonable. You’ll save energy and cash for the parts of Vikos-Aoos that truly demand your attention.

Keep in mind that during peak season, these places can fill up quickly. Booking ahead is wise to avoid scrambling for a spot after a long day of hiking.

Transportation is crucial. If you’re driving, factor in fuel costs, which can be around €1.70 per liter. Public transport options are limited, so renting a car might be necessary, costing about €30 to €60 per day.

Lastly, don’t forget about gear. If you need to rent equipment like hiking poles or backpacks, budget around €5 to €15 per item per day.

Being aware of these costs will help you allocate your budget wisely, ensuring you have the energy and funds for the experiences that truly matter in this stunning national park.
