Backpacking in Zagori Villages
👍 Recommendedvillage ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated October 6, 2026

Ten years ago Zagori’s stone villages felt half-asleep: woodsmoke in the air, one kafeneio open, shepherds louder than tourists. Today the same cobbled lanes are cleaner, pricier, and busier in peak season, but the mountains still close in around you and the air still smells of pine and wet rock after rain. Zagori isn’t a single town; it’s a scattered cluster of hamlets in Epirus, northwestern Greece, high above Ioannina and far from the island party circuit. For backpackers it works best as a base for hiking the Vikos Gorge and hopping between villages, not as a transport hub. Buses are sparse, so rideshares and hitchhiking matter; a rental car turns frustration into freedom. It’s calm, social in a low-key way, safer and more scenic than Ioannina, but also more expensive and less spontaneous.

💡 HighlightsEssential experiences to have while visiting Zagori Villages

  1. Monodendri (Beloi viewpoint & Church of Agia Paraskevi) — Classic Zagori: a tiny stone village perched above Vikos Gorge with a cliff-edge viewpoint (Beloi) that gives the full “jaw-drop” panorama, plus a frescoed 18th-century church you can peek into.
  2. Vikos Gorge (hiking from Vikos/Monodendri) — One of the deepest gorges in the world by proportional depth; you can hike down into the canyon, follow the Voidomatis river for jaw-dropping geology, or simply stand at the rim and watch vultures wheel.
  3. Oxia viewpoint — A dramatic single-rock promontory with an almost vertical view into Vikos Gorge. Short walk from the nearby trailhead; perfect for sunrise or a quick, heart-in-your-mouth photo op.
  4. Megalo and Mikro Papigo — Two mountain villages that feel unchanged: stone mansions, narrow alleys

  4. Megalo and Mikro Papigo — Two mountain villages that feel unchanged: stone mansions, narrow alleys and instant access to alpine scenery. Mikro Papigo is the practical base for exploring the high trails and cooling off in natural pools.
  5. Drakolimni (the “Dragon” Lake) on Tymfi — A real mountain-day-hike reward: an alpine lake above tree line with unique plant life and views that make the effort worth it. Expect a full-day walk from Papigo and rough, beautiful terrain.
  6. Voidomatis River spring and riverbank — The river’s spring and the turquoise reaches near Vikos/Papigo are famous for crystal-clear water—great for short swims, easy paddles, or renting a local guide for a float trip on calm sections.
  7. Vradeto and the old stone staircase — Small village with a dramatic stone stairway (the Vradeto steps) that links paths and offers an old-school mountain passage plus one of the best distant views of the gorge and surrounding peaks.
  8. Vitsa village & its Folklore Museum — A well-preserved example of Zagori village life: neat stone houses, shaded squares and a compact museum with rural costumes, tools and the kind of local history that gives context to the walls you’re staring at.
  9. Kipi village — One of the larger Zagori settlements with excellent traditional architecture and easy access to several one-arched stone bridges and riverside walks; a good spot to watch daily life and enjoy a proper village kafeneio (coffee house).
  10. Dilofo village — A postcard-perfect Zagori hamlet with a tiny central square, carved stone houses and crisp mountain air. It’s small, photogenic and a clean example of how the region’s built identity survives.
A few easy day trips outside the Zagori villages: the lakeside city of Ioannina (castle and island), the dramatic Aoos Gorge and stone bridge at Konitsa, and the alpine town of Metsovo — Konitsa’s bridge and gorge is my personal favorite.

  • Price Fluctuations: Accommodation and local tavernas hike prices in July and August. Booking in shoulder seasons often means better deals and more personal service.
Pro-tip: Aim for late May or early October—when the air smells fresh, the light softens the stone bridges, and you’re sharing trails mostly with locals, not crowds.

The air here carries the scent of pine and woodsmoke, and the light filters through ancient plane trees, setting a calm but lively tone.

Monodendri is a hub for hikers and solo travelers because it offers easy access to the Vikos Gorge trailheads. The village’s small squares and tavernas buzz quietly in the evenings, making it easy to meet fellow adventurers without the pressure of a party scene. Hostels and guesthouses here cater to budget travelers, often run by locals who know the trails and can share insider tips.

Papingo, a bit higher and quieter, feels like a reward after a day’s trek. It’s less crowded but still welcoming, with a few budget lodgings that attract solo backpackers looking for a peaceful night under the stars. Compared to other villages like Tsepelovo or Kipi, which lean more toward upscale or family tourism, Monodendri and Papingo offer that authentic, grounded vibe where you can connect with both nature and people without breaking the bank.
