Backpacking in Vikos Gorge
🏆 Top pickhike ranked #3
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 23, 2026

People hear “deepest gorge in the world” and picture a dramatic but fenced-off viewpoint; Vikos Gorge is the opposite. It’s a full-body hike, not a quick selfie stop. Tucked in the Zagori region of Epirus, in northwest Greece, it cuts between stone villages like Monodendri, Vikos, and Papigo, and you feel that isolation in your legs. The classic traverse runs roughly 12-15 km, long enough that the heat and constant rocky underfoot start to grind you down, especially on the brutal exit climbs. In return, you get sheer limestone walls, cold springs you can dunk your head in, and that first beer in Papigo that tastes like a trophy. Public transport is patchy and slow, so buses plus a taxi are usually required, but it’s still more accessible than some wilder Pindus routes and far more immersive than the shorter, busier viewpoints and balcony trails elsewhere in Zagori.

  1. Oxia viewpoint — A jaw-dropping cliff edge that drops straight into the gorge; the panorama of the canyon walls and the ribbon of Voidomatis below is the classic Vikos postcard. Go early for cooler air and softer light — and don’t stand too close if you’re wearing a heavy pack. (Personal favorite — the scale hits you here in a way photos don’t.)
  2. Monodendri village and the Church of Agia Paraskevi — A stone-built village that feels frozen in time and serves as a main trailhead; the tiny hilltop church/monastery overlooks the gorge and is a peaceful cultural counterpoint to the raw scenery. It’s a good place to refuel, talk to locals, and soak up the traditional Zagori architecture.

  3. Voidomatis River and its springs — The gorge’s floor is cut by the icy, turquoise Voidomatis — famous for crystal-clear water and a microclimate that keeps the bottom cool and lush. If you’re into creek-wading, swimming, or paddling, this is the reward after a steep descent; the color and clarity are unusually striking for a mountain river.
  4. Sheer limestone walls, geology, and endemic flora — Vikos is a limestone karst masterpiece: towering vertical cliffs, narrow chasms, and pockets where unusual alpine and Mediterranean plants grow side by side. The scale, the rock strata, and the micro-habitats make the trail feel geologically dramatic compared with more gentle forest hikes.
  5. Wildlife and raptor watching — Quiet stretches often reveal griffon vultures, other raptors, and a surprising variety of mountain birds; the gorge’s microclimates support species you won’t easily spot in lowland trails. Bring binoculars and move slowly at lookout points — you’re likely to see birds riding the thermals along those cliff faces.
