How to Spend 2 Days in Guernsey

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 2-day Guernsey hit-list is for first-timers who want maximum impact with minimum logistics: think slow mornings, big coastal views, and history you can actually feel under your boots. You’ll move mostly on foot and by local bus around St. Peter Port and the nearby coast, keeping the pace relaxed but purposeful so you never feel rushed between sea, cliffs, and cobbles.

Day 1: St. Peter Port, Castle Cornet & Hauteville House

Start by grounding yourself in St. Peter Port, the island’s compact, character-packed harbour town where you can walk everywhere. Wander the steep lanes and waterfront first so you get your bearings, then give yourself a solid half-day at Castle Cornet, exploring its ramparts, small museums, and the constant sea views that explain why this rock mattered for centuries. In the afternoon, climb up to Hauteville House, Victor Hugo’s former home, where the eccentric interiors and rooftop views over the harbour connect Guernsey’s literary past with the island you’re walking … read more 👉

In the afternoon, climb up to Hauteville House, Victor Hugo’s former home, where the eccentric interiors and rooftop views over the harbour connect Guernsey’s literary past with the island you’re walking through right now; finish with an easy evening back in St. Peter Port’s cafes or along the pier, no extra transport needed.

Day 2: Cliff Path Walk & German Occupation Museum

On day two, shift from town to trail with a section of the Cliff Path Walk close to St. Peter Port, using local buses or a short taxi hop to reach your chosen trailhead so you spend your time on the cliffs, not in transit. The path gives you that classic Guernsey mix of steep steps, sea air, and little bays below, but in a bite-sized chunk that still leaves energy for the afternoon. After lunch, head to the German Occupation Museum, where the compact but intense exhibits and personal stories give real weight to the bunkers and fortifications you’ve been seeing along the coast, rounding out the island’s story before you roll back into St. Peter Port for one last harbour walk.

For a tiny extra twist, consider a quick detour to the quiet headland near Fort Hommet, where old fortifications and wild grass make a low-key, off-the-radar sunset perch away from the crowds.

🙋 FAQTraveler FAQ

Guernsey is very easy to backpack independently because it’s compact, safe, and English-speaking, with a relaxed pace that lets you improvise. The main challenge for budget travelers is that accommodation and food can be pricey, so you get the most value by booking campsites or hostels early, using supermarkets for meals, and timing your visit outside peak school holidays to keep costs under control.
If you’re tight on time, 2 full days is enough to walk St Peter Port, hit a couple of coastal paths, and squeeze in one island side-trip. For a more relaxed backpacker rhythm with time to hike, swim, and do at least one extra island like Sark or Herm without rushing, 3 to 4 days is the sweet spot.
You can absolutely get around Guernsey without a car, and as a backpacker you’re usually better off without one. The island bus network is cheap and covers the main areas, and you can combine buses with walking the coastal paths or renting a bike for a day, which keeps costs low and lets you actually see the cliffs and coves instead of just driving past them.
For a budget traveler, the must-visits are the places where the views and atmosphere are free. The coastal paths around the south coast cliffs, especially near Pleinmont and Moulin Huet, are worth prioritizing, and St Peter Port’s harborfront and Castle Cornet area are great for wandering. If you can swing a ferry, a day trip to Herm or Sark gives you that wild-island feel with minimal extra cost beyond the ticket and a packed lunch.
If you’re short on time, you can skip slower inland villages and any paid attractions that don’t add much beyond what you already get from walking the coast and exploring St Peter Port. You can also skip trying to see every beach; pick one or two good ones near where you’re staying and spend your energy on the cliff paths and, if possible, a single island side-trip instead of bouncing around the whole map.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Guernsey in seconds.
