How to Spend 3 Days in Guernsey

By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 5, 2026
This 3-day route is for travellers who want a fuller taste of Guernsey’s coast, villages, and history without turning the trip into an endurance test. You’ll mix buses and short taxi hops with plenty of walking, balancing big-ticket sights with time to linger over cliff views and beach sunsets.

Day 1: St. Peter Port, Castle Cornet & Candie Gardens

Settle into St. Peter Port as your base, using its harbourfront and backstreets as your orientation walk before diving into Castle Cornet for a deep but manageable dose of island history and sea views. In the afternoon, climb up to Candie Gardens, where the terraced paths, museum, and viewpoints give you a quieter, greener angle on town life and a soft landing after travel day, with everything reachable on foot so you never have to rush for a bus.

Day 2: West Coast - Vazon Bay, Fort Grey & Castel

Day 2: West Coast - Vazon Bay, Fort Grey & Castel

On day two, ride a bus out to the west coast and make Vazon Bay your first stop, giving yourself time to walk the long curve of sand, watch surfers, or just sit on the sea wall and let the Atlantic mood sink in. From there, continue along the coast to Fort Grey, the “cup and saucer” fort that anchors the shoreline and ties the open seascape to Guernsey’s defensive past in a way that’s easy to absorb in an hour or two. Wrap the day by exploring Castel, the parish that frames much of this coastline, wandering lanes and viewpoints before heading back to St. Peter Port, keeping the day full but never frantic thanks to simple bus links along one main coastal arc.

Day 3: South Coast Cliffs - Petit Bot Bay, Southern cliffs & Torteval

For your final day, swing to the south coast and start at Petit Bot Bay, a compact cove that drops you straight into Guernsey’s steeper, wilder side. From here, walk a rewarding stretch of the Southern cliffs, picking a section that matches your fitness so you can enjoy the ups and downs, sea stacks, and constant viewpoints without turning it into a forced march. In the afternoon, continue by bus or taxi to Torteval, where quiet lanes, headland paths, and a slower rural rhythm give you a last, more local-feeling chapter before you loop back to St. Peter Port for your final evening.

For a bonus detour that most visitors miss, slip out to the modest headland near Le Gouffre café, where a short wander delivers raw cliff edges and sea noise with almost no one else around.

🙋 FAQFAQ: Backpacking Guernsey

Guernsey is very easy to backpack independently because it’s compact, safe, and English-speaking, with a relaxed pace that lets you improvise. The main challenge for budget travelers is that accommodation and food can be pricey, so you get the most value by booking campsites or hostels early, using supermarkets for meals, and timing your visit outside peak school holidays to keep costs under control.
If you’re tight on time, 2 full days is enough to walk St Peter Port, hit a couple of coastal paths, and squeeze in one island side-trip. For a more relaxed backpacker rhythm with time to hike, swim, and do at least one extra island like Sark or Herm without rushing, 3 to 4 days is the sweet spot.
You can absolutely get around Guernsey without a car, and as a backpacker you’re usually better off without one. The island bus network is cheap and covers the main areas, and you can combine buses with walking the coastal paths or renting a bike for a day, which keeps costs low and lets you actually see the cliffs and coves instead of just driving past them.
For a budget traveler, the must-visits are the places where the views and atmosphere are free. The coastal paths around the south coast cliffs, especially near Pleinmont and Moulin Huet, are worth prioritizing, and St Peter Port’s harborfront and Castle Cornet area are great for wandering. If you can swing a ferry, a day trip to Herm or Sark gives you that wild-island feel with minimal extra cost beyond the ticket and a packed lunch.
If you’re short on time, you can skip slower inland villages and any paid attractions that don’t add much beyond what you already get from walking the coast and exploring St Peter Port. You can also skip trying to see every beach; pick one or two good ones near where you’re staying and spend your energy on the cliff paths and, if possible, a single island side-trip instead of bouncing around the whole map.
Yes, our itinerary-planner does exactly that. Set your trip length in days, give your interests and travel style, optionally give start- and end location and/or some mandatory stops you would like to include and the itinerary planner creates your personalized routes for Guernsey in seconds.
