Backpacking in Fertő-Hanság
🌟 Highlightnational park ranked #6
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated May 20, 2026

Many travelers assume Fertő-Hanság National Park is just “the Hungarian side of Lake Neusiedl” and nothing more than reeds and bike paths. That’s lazy thinking. The park sits in northwest Hungary, along the Austrian border near Sopron and Fertőd, and it’s a low-key, marsh-and-meadow landscape that rewards patience more than adrenaline. Hiking is flat, sometimes monotonous, and often exposed to wind, but birdlife is excellent and the big-sky, salt-lake scenery has its own quiet pull. Access by public transport is decent, entrance fees are usually low, and crowds are mild compared with Balaton Uplands or Bükk. Camping and budget beds exist but are scattered, so you need to plan. If you want dramatic peaks, go elsewhere; if you want slow, bird-focused walking and rural calm, this is the right corner of Hungary.

  • Alkaline (szikes) grasslands and salt pans — salt-loving meadows that burst with color in spring and support unusual plants and orchids you won’t find in ordinary fields. These open steppic habitats also attract interesting insects and small mammals.
  • Flat, scenic cycling and hiking routes — mostly level terrain makes Fertő-Hanság perfect for budget travelers on a bike. Routes hug the shore, cut through reed fringes and link tiny villages, so you can cover a lot without breaking a sweat (or the bank).
  • Fertőrákos quarry and limestone formations — a dramatic contrast to the marshes: exposed limestone cliffs, fossils and an open-air cave theatre carved into the rock. It’s photogenic and feels almost cinematic next to the lake’s flatness.
  • Traditional lakeshore villages and reedland walks — low-key fishing and reed-harvesting communities offer peaceful trails, bird hides and authentic local life. Walking between vineyards, reedbeds and shore is one of the best ways to soak in the park’s mixed cultural-natural landscape.
