- Szalafő and the ”szer” villages — a living patchwork of tiny clustered farmsteads (called szerek) with wooden houses, little chapels and quiet lanes. It’s the best place to feel the region’s slow rural rhythm and photograph traditional architecture without crowds.
- Ancient oak and mixed forests — sprawling, old-growth-ish oak copses that carpet the hills, full of fungi, mossy glades and forest birds. Walks here feel pleasantly shady and restful even on warm days.
- Hay meadows full of orchids and butterflies — the park’s traditional late-mown meadows explode with wildflowers in spring and early summer. Look closely and you’ll find several orchid species and lots of pollinators; great for low-effort wildlife watching.

- Birdlife and wetland corners — small ponds, ditches and reedbeds attract waders, warblers and the occasional larger species (think storks and buzzards rather than herds of deer). Early morning is the time to catch the best activity.
- Marked hiking and cycling routes — a dense network of easy-to-moderate trails and quiet country roads link villages, meadows and viewpoints. Perfect for day loops or a relaxed multi-day bike trip with plenty of homestays en route.
- Őriszentpéter visitor center and local museums — compact, useful starting point for maps, seasonal tips and small ethnographic displays that explain the unique human-shaped landscape you’re hiking through.
- Rolling-hill panoramas and lookout spots — modest peaks and cleared ridgelines give wide, peaceful views over the patchwork countryside. Not alpine drama, but the gentle, green openness is exactly the park’s charm.
