- Kishanpur’s tall grasslands — The classic Terai landscape: sea-like tall grass, marsh pockets and scattered sal groves. It’s where the grassland specialists (and good photo light at dawn) live — quiet, prime for slow walks or early jeep rides.
- Barasingha (swamp deer) herds — Dudhwa is one of the best places in north India to see these floppy-antlered deer grazing in wetlands and grasslands. They’re relaxed in the right zones, so mornings in Kishanpur give the best chance for close, undisturbed sightings. (personal favorite)
- Bengal tiger & other big mammals — Tigers, leopards and wild boar use the mosaic of forest and grassland here. Sightings aren’t guaranteed (they rarely are), but the habitat is excellent and guides know the classic tiger corridors to try on safaris.

- Katarniaghat / Sharda riverine zone — River channels, ox-bows and floodplain forest give a very different feel from the dry forest blocks. Boat trips and riverside hides are top for watching waterbirds, otters and the riparian ecosystem that links to Nepal.
- Birdwatching hotspots — The mix of grassland, marsh and forest brings raptors, woodpeckers, kingfishers and winter migrants. Bring a scope if you have one; mornings and late afternoons are when the birds show up in numbers.
- Guided safaris and nature walks — Jeep and elephant safaris are the usual ways to cover ground, but don’t skip short guided trails from the forest stations — guides point out tracks, smaller mammals, frogs and the tiny details that make the place feel alive.
