Backpacking in Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve
👀 For curious travelersnational park ranked #30
By Johan Kruseman 🇳🇱 | Updated September 4, 2026

Choosing Pachmarhi Biosphere Reserve forces you to decide whether you’ll base yourself in the small hill town and day-trip into the forest, or pay more for permits, guides, and jeeps to go deeper; that choice decides how wild your experience actually feels. Pachmarhi sits in Madhya Pradesh’s Satpura range, central India. It’s a mellow, forested plateau with waterfalls, short hikes, and some wildlife, but don’t expect tiger-safari drama like Satpura National Park or Pench. Access is decent by road, but permits, mandatory guides, and scattered viewpoints mean you bleed time and small fees all day. Crowds spike on weekends and Indian holidays, and most “treks” are really half-day walks between viewpoints. Camping is tightly restricted, so backpackers end up in basic guesthouses or cheap lodges in town, which are fine but rarely charming. Overall, Pachmarhi is quieter and cooler than much of central India, good for slow walkers and waterfall-chasers, but less rewarding if you’re chasing serious wildlife or multi-day backcountry routes.

  • Dhupgarh (Dhupegarh) — The highest point in Madhya Pradesh and the best place for sunrise/sunset views over the Satpura range. Short, rocky trails lead up through pine and mixed forest; the light in the early morning is unreal. (My personal favorite — worth the early alarm.)
  • Bee Falls — A classic plunge waterfall with a shallow pool at the bottom that’s perfect for a cooling dip after a dusty hike. The approach is a pleasant walk through shady trees rather than a long trek, so it’s easy to include on a day outing.
  • Apsara Vihar — A smooth rock stream and natural bathing pool carved into the plateau, photogenic and quieter than Bee Falls. Great in the wet season when the stream sings over the stones, and surprisingly peaceful for a popular spot.
  • Pandav Caves — A cluster of ancient, rock-cut

  • Pandav Caves — A cluster of ancient, rock-cut caves tied to local Mahabharata legends. They’re compact and cool inside, surrounded by a short loop trail that feels properly wild compared with the busier viewpoints.
  • Jata Shankar — A small cave-shrine where a stalagmite resembling a Shiva linga sits behind a curtain of dripping water. It’s a neat mix of geology, quiet worship, and a green, mossy micro-climate to explore.
  • Handi Khoh — A dramatic cliff-edge chasm with sheer drops and raw views into the valley. Not a long stop, but the sense of space and the sound of wind in the gorge make it memorable — go around sunrise or late afternoon for the best light.
  • Birding and Wildlife Trails — The reserve is great for early-morning birdwatching (warblers, woodpeckers, raptors) and spotting mammals like deer, langurs and occasionally sloth bear or leopard tracks. Take a guided walk or a quiet forest trail at dawn for the best chance of seeing animals.
